Shannon, the poet drunj mer, has been in town. this. week. He and Mrs. Shannon hpve been spending some time at their ranch at Spanish point, but will leave in a few days for their eastern home. Grustave Berg, of Two Harbors Mich., with ten others have filed desert claims across the river and he is waiting here for another party from the same place who will file adjoining them. Williston now furnishes em ployment for laborers the year around and no man need be out of work. Several coal mines have opened up which gives employ ment to all the men which can be odtained and should the demand for Williams county lignite con tinue men will be in demand. The case of the state against R. H. Ames for an assault with attempt to kill proved to be very interesting before concluded. It was given ov^r to the jury about 6 o'clock Tuesday evening and they were out until about 11 o'clock Wednesday morning when they were discharged for having not agreed. Valley City, N. D., Nov. 17 Some of the voters of precinct No 32—Svea Township, haAe acquir ed the habit of distributing a few complimentary votes at each elec tion The votes are generally in favor of a neighbor and appear in the returns in the''scattering column." No harm is intended, and the good people down there regard this method of voting in the light of a joke. This year the Svea voters did business with their scattering votes. Two of them wrote in the name of J. P. H. Ap plequist for the office of county surveyor, and these two votes were enough to elect him. No party made a nomination for this office and consequently Mr. Applequist, with his two votes can qualify for county surveyor if he chooses. "Its an ill wind that blows nobody good." The Fargo coal dealers have given out the report that the people of North Dakota need ex pect no hard coal this winter and should prepare themselves to burn soft and lignite coal. Such an as sertion causes no alarm in Willis ton as v. are"all used to burning lignite md find it the cheapest fuel in use. There are millions of tons of this fuel in this county which is-of the best grade that has yet been tested. R. N. Miller who has filed a claim has shipped sev eral cars oast and has orders as fast as he has been able to fill them Coal on board cars in Williston fit §3.00 per ton can be shipped to all points on the Great Northern at a reasonable rate and burned much cheaper than any other fuel. Its redeeming qualities are that it is good, cheap and clean. lU Hofflund Stories. In some parts of McHenry county fine limestone is found. Tower City has arranged for some winter entertainments. Edgeley people are proud of the neat appearance of the city. Some more Ward County blind pis* gers were rounded up. The people of Sheldon are to have a new rural delivery route. The farmers of this state have a con* tinuous song of prosperity. The geese and deer will suffer now that the campaign is over. H. F. Arnold of Larimore has just sold a $40,000 batch of land. Some alleged land frauds have been Investigated around Oberon. The code is catching a few roasts on account of the inaccuracies. Some of the elevators at Esmond were put up in a hurry-up style. There is a great demand for a reduc -tion of freight rates on lignite. The work of spotters in Griggs County was a surprise to many. The Morton County delinquent tax list was unusually small tbis year. E. Russell of Kindred has purchased a photograph gallery at Larimore. The members of the bowling club at Aneta are decidedly enthusiastic. Four men have been sheriffs of Barnes county for twenty-four years. The Michigan City elevators and stores were all having some hot com petition recently. An intoxicated half-breed raised a rumpus at Dunseith, and his gun was taken from him. New Rockford sports have the old hunting coach formerly used by the Marquis de More*. It is rather remarkable how man) people were willing to be sacrificed as candidates for office. Some horse dealers are charged with stealing a lot of stuff from a Walsh county farmer. State's Attorney Brooke of Towner was thrown from a rig in a runaway and badly shaken up.
