For governor Sarles carried one valleys county, Cass, losing, his home county. He carried every county in the southern part of the state except Barnes. He also carried McLean, Eddy, Nelson and possibly McHenry. Burke, for governor carried every valley county except Cass, including Sarles' home couniy, Trail, he carried every county along the international line ex cepting Williams, and in addi tion he carried Griggs. BRIEF MESSAGE IS RECEIVED FROM HIM Hints of Hardships and Danger in Telegram Regarding Attempt to Reach Northern Goal—Thwarted by" Drifting Ice. New York, Nov. 5.—The world's polar exploration record has been broken by Commander Robert E. Peary. The intrepid American has gone 34 miles nearer the north pole than any man who ever went into the arctic seas. Lieut. Peary reached lat itude 87:06, and hints of incredible hardships and dangers are made in a telegram to Herbert Bridgman, secretary of the Peary Arctic club. Message Tells of Great Feat. The message follows: "Hopedale, Labrador, via Twillin gate, N. E., Nov. 2.—Roosevelt win tered north coast Qrantland some what north Alert winter quarters. Went north with sledges February via Hecla and Columbia. Delayed by open water between 84 and 85 de grees. Beyond 85 days. In 1896 Nansen reached 86:14 north latitude, and his exploit was hailed as a tremendous exploit, for that was 196 miles farther noi'th than Gi^eety jority of about two hundred. The returns as they came in first g&ve a lead to two or three of the independents and had the candidates for sheriff about even. Returns from the eastern and northern part of the county however were strong republican and with but the six precincts to hear from the republicans have about the 200 majority* We give the totals as far as heard from, on the Governor, Knauf and Fisk and all county officers having opposition^. Nansen held the rec ord. for only four years. Then ip 1900 Capt. Cagni, of the duke of Abruzzi'a expedition, pushed his way northward, and after almost incredible, hardships reached a point 23 miles farther north than Nansen had gone. Until now: the Italian explorer has held the record for farthest north. Now it is shattered by an American. News from Commander Peary has been awaited with anxiety for several weeks, as July 16 was the date he had fixed for the end of the "dash" across the ice cap surrounding the pole. The commander, when he sailed from New York more than a year ago, fondly hoped that the end of the dash would carry him to the pole itself. Says Steamer Was Damaged. St. Johns, N. P., Nov. 5.—The fact that Commander Robert E. Peary's steamer Roosevelt was damaged by ice during its long stay in the arctic regions while the explorer made his last djtsh to the pole was reported Saturday from the Moravian mission station at Hopedale, on the Labrador coast, where the Roosevelt has ar rived. The extent of the damages is unknown. Commander Peary also re ported that the steamer was in need of coal. Wife Receives Message.' New York, Nov. 5.—Mrs. Robert E. Peary, wife of the explorer, received Saturday the following message from Commander Peary, dated at Hopedale, Labrador: "Homeward voyage incessant bat* tie with ice, storms and head winds. Propeller damaged and progress very slow. Waiting here for coal from mail steamer. Have no anxiety. Ex pect wire from Chateau Bay. Am perfectly well." Mr. Bridgman said that Commander Peary's mention of Chateau Bay might indicate that he expected to touch there on the way to Sydney. Mr. Bridgman believes that Peary ob tains coal from the mail steamer which carried his message to Twil lingate, N. F. Congratulations for Explorer. The following message of congratu lation for Commander Peary was re ceived by Herbert L. Bridgman, sec retary of the Peary Arctic club: "Peary, Care Bridgman, New York: Very hearty congratulations upon y~ur splendid achievement. (Signed) "William S. Bruce. "Edinburgh, Scotland, Nov. 3." Mr. Bruce was the leader of the Scottish antarctic expedition, and spent two years exploring the antarc tic regions with the Scotia. Mr. Bridgman said that he did not believe Commander Peary's steamer had been seriously' damaged by ice, T. S. BECKER Attorney at Law First door south of Arlington Hotel. Wiiliston N.
