POULTRY YARD CLEANLINESS
There is no person who can long
disregard the question of cleanliness
without bringing disastrous results
into his flock and this applies to small
town breeders as well as the large
"breeders.
At this season of the year nearly
all of the grass is goine and the runs
are bare and with hot weather at
hand increases the dangers arising
from neglected runs.
Runs Properly Laid Out
There is an advantage in having
the houses and runs on an elevation
facing the south or southeast there
by whenever it rains the yard will be
cleaned and the time saved may be
spent in cleaning the inside of the
Poultry House.
Keep Ground in Good Condition

You merely put a drop or two of this

day and instantly the corn stops hurting,
then tomorrow sometime you may find
the old torturous pest somewhere in
your stocking, having fallen off entirely
without a particle of soreness, pain or
irritation. The skin surrounding and

land. Tilling will prove a good in
vestment and the results obtained will
be two fold. It is best to either spade
or plow all the ground that is de
voted to poultry every two months.
Give it a good coating of agriculture
lime over the entire surface to purify
the soil if any contamination should
exist and then plant some quick
growing crop for vegetable growth
thereby giving the fowls something
to relish besides being a soil sweetner
and renovater.
Where it is possible it is always
best to have two runs, so while one
is being used the other can be seeded
down and visa versa.
One thing must be watched very
closely and that is that no holes or
low spots exist where water can stand
and stagnate. The fowls drink the
water and it is very dangerous to al
low such conditions to remain. To
allow this condition to exist is only
breeding disease. Many times this
carelessness has wiped out of exis
tence large flocks in a very short
time.
On the farm where the flock of
fowls have large range, little concern
is paid to the above, but birds must
not be allowed to run in the barn yard
where pools of stagnant water exist
in the hot months for in this lies the
danger of serious digestive ailments.
While this article is headed poultry
yard cleanliness, we must not over
look the poultry house for therein
lies enemies, such as lice and mites.

wash, adding some good coal tar dis
infectant will not only brighten up
things, but will greatly add to its
efficiency. The house should be gone
over two or three times each year,
at which times all nests, dropping
boards and roosts should be removed
in order to have the solution pene
trate all cracks and crevises. Paint
the roosts with a solution of Lice
Liquid.
In hot weather the roosts and nests
should be sprayed weekly in order to
keep the lice and mites from getting
a start.
Unusual cleanliness is demanded in
the care of drinking vessels and they
should be thoroughly cleaned every
day or two, using a little disinfectant
in the wash water. Keep the drink
ing water in a cool place as the fowls
enjoy a cool drink the same as you
do.
Results are what you make them
so take no chances on the cleanliness
of your yards and houses.
WHEN TO CAPONIZE
When it comes to marketing poul
try, capons, with their tender, plump
meat brings much higher pr'.ce-i than
ti.- tougher and mere staggy meat
of the cockerel. But even in capons,
prices vary large capons bring the
ot st prices. For this reasois. leg
r.orns and the small breeds are
It is best for the beginner to prac
tice on a dead bird. It will not af
fect the use of the carcass for the
table, but will allow you to make a
careful study of the birds anatomy,
and after a few trials it will give you
confidence in your ability to perform
the operation correctly.
You will probably kill a few birds
in operating, but this loss seldom ex
ceeds 5 per cent. At the same time
birds killed in this way are not wast
ed since they are perfectly good for
eating.
The one .thing to avoid is incom
plete removal of the organs. Any
piece left may grow to a consider
able size through Nature's effort to
repair the loss. The result will be
what is called a "slip"—which is
neither cockerel nor capon, but be
tween the two. You can't get capon
prices for "slips" so use every caution
to guard against them. This is doub
ly important since evidence that the
work is not satisfactory is not always
apparent and you may go on com
mitting these mistakes extensively so
that they affect a great many birds.
TO ALL HANDLERS OF EGGS
Many dealers are not complying
with the regulations with regard to
the handling and sorting of eggs be
fore the same are purchased or ship
ped.
It is necessary to buy and sell all
eggs "rots" out. For your informa
tion the following kinds of eggs are
"rots" they are inedible and are not
to be sold or shipped:

The eggs of this class are not
edible and the buying or shipping of
these eggs is illegal.

seldom caponized, the heavy and
medium breeds being used almost en'
tirely. Another caution is to select
birds with color of skin and legs
meeting the demands of the market
for which the birds are intended.
While the operation of caponizing
your cockerels may be done at any
age, it is obvious that best results
will be had if the castrating is done
when the bird is young, before the.
organs to be removed are so well de
veloped that the operation becomes
difficult and dangerous. Capanize
medium weight breeds when they
weigh about two or three pounds and
the heavier breeds when they reach
the three or four pound stage.
Spring hatched cockerels are right
for caponizing in mid-summer and
this will put them on the market in
time to get the best prices. A big
capon requires ten months to be fin
ished off in the proper manner.
The operation itself isn't difficult
andalmost anyone can do it if they
will study the different steps in the
work and exercise that care that is
always demanded in such affairs.
First of all, get a set of caponizing
instruments. There are several styles
on the market atprices ranging from
$2.00 to $5.00. with good care, a set
will last a lifetime. With the instru
ments you will receive a book of in
structions describing the operation in
detail, giving suggestions about care,
preparations and precautions and
telling how to hold the bird while the
operation is being performed.
