R«DV,
WHAT 8TOCKWELL DIDN'T
HAVE
The present superintendent of pub
lic instruction la the first man to
drag the public school system into
the broil of politics. His predeces
sors always respected the dignity of
the office, as also do the heads of
educational departments in other
states. During the last two years
and a half of the ^present Incumb
ent's tern he has mixed in every po
litical squabble and has traveled a
bout the state delivering stump
speeches, making use of the acquaint
ance gained through the office to
build up a following, for he has con
gressional aspirations. The man's eg
otism is well illustrated by the follow
ing episode. iHe maintains that he
is inspired to do in North Dakota
what LaFollette did in Wisconsin.
When the White primary bill was un
der discussion in the last legislature
Stockwjell got Into a dispute with
Tread we
11 Twitdhell, now the insurg
ent candidate for governor. He under
took to do his LaFofliette posing
stunt and Twitchell laughed at him.
"Don't you suppose," exclaimed
Stockwell, "that I can duplicate La
Follette's work here in North Dako
ta?"
"No, I don't," returned Twitdhell.
"Why not?" asked Stockwell.
"Because you haven't got the
brains," retorted Twitchell sharply.
The conversation ended right there.
Cards have been received here by
several of our young people announc
ing the marriage Saturday, June 6th,
of Miss Gracia, eldest daughter. of
Mr and Mrs. M. L. Meyer, formerly of
this city, and Mr. Hugo A. Tornow
at the home of the bride's parents
in Minneapolis. The bride is an ac
complished young lady and has a
large circle of friends here who
hasten to extend congratulations.
It has been discovered that some di
sease has attacked the shade trees of
St. Thomas, and many of them are
dying. Their foliage is scant and the
bark looks as if a black fungus
growth was spreading over it. The
citizens are genuinely alarmed, and
will immediately send for an expert
to come and examine the trees. St.
Thomas has probably as fine shade
trees as any city in the state, and
should this disease spread and kill
the trees, or any considerable num
ber of them, it would be an irre
pairable loss.
Foy's blacksmith shop was burned
at Velva. Loss $1,500. This is the
second time Air. Foy has lost every
thing by fire in 18 months.
Our
Trade
Is
Crowing
Daring the past six months
our trade amonir the farmers
was more than doubled. Why?
For one reason we have been
making a play for the country
business, offering the highest
cash price for produce, or we
have taken the produce in trade
allowing very liberal prices. We
need the farm produce. We have
a
great demand for eggs, butter,
etc., in our store, and consider
this just as good to us as money.
Another thing, the farmers
have learned that they can ac
tually save money by buying
their groceries at this store.
They have learned that we are
not ^hot-air" merchants, and
have learned to take what we
Bay
as the truth. We have
"made gQpd" ii| every respect.
II anyone^ver bity& a thing at
this store,, which does not prove
satisfactory, we are more than
glad to make it. right. But
chances are ninety-nine to one
that what you get here will just
suit you. We buy our groceries
fresh, turn them over often, sell
for cash or its equivalent, have
no bad accounts, and therefore
can give you better prices
If you are not already our
customer, we will be pleased to
have you drop around and give
us a trial anyway.
