Regina, Sask., Sept. 15.—Prelimi nary government reports of the opera tion of provincial liquor depots, which took the place of saloons several months ago, show a great falling off in the per capita consumption of liq uor. "The Saskatchewan plan of super vising the sale of liquor is returning splendid results," said a provincial of ficial. "The law by which the govern ment took over the business and sells liquor only in original packages, and with the restriction that such package may be opened only in the home of the purchaser, has worked wonders." It is yet impossible to determine the exact reduction in the sale of liquor in the province, but the falling off, it is said, is very great. Under the Saskatchewan law, 30 provincial liquor depots were estab lished. Here government agents sell only in original packages, which must be carried to the home of the pur chaser before being opened. No liquor may be consumed upon the premises where sold. A new feature, known as Section 3, was ^put into operation this week. It provides for the handling of liquor for medicinal purposes. Drug stores must first obtain permits for handling liquor, and only a special amount may be kept in stock. Sales of liquor in such stores are permitted only upon a physician's prescription.
