D. When Albert Grass (Two Bears) fell on tihe Lor raine front, there perished the last of a long line of distinguished American princes. Albert Grass was a grand nephew and adopted grandson of John Grass, Charing Bear, or "Mato-Watak Pe", for almost fifty years chief jus tice of the Teton Dakoitahs on Stand ing Rock. Feeble, more than ninety years old, but with the fire and oourage of hia race in his heart, John Grass, only a little more than a year ago, made at his home south of Fort Yates, a memorable address in dedicating to the service of his country his foster son, Captain A. B. WelcJh (Charging Bear, the Soldier), captain of I com pany, the Bismarck unit in the Sec ond North Dakota, and his grandson, Albert Grass, or Two Bears, an enlist ed member of that company. The hand of death then was on the venerable chief justice, but he spoke the words which fired many a brave Teton Dakotah heart and which have been largely instrumental in the vol untary enlistment of more than 200 young warriors from .Standing Rock who have followed in the footsteps of their brother, Two Bears. Grave of Once Noted Chief Unvisited by His Tribesmen. Fort Yates, N. D.—In all North Dakota there is nothing quite so lone ly and so deserted and so altogether pathetic as the unkempt grave of Sit ting Bull, chief of the Sioux, which stands alone and almost forgotten in the midst of a great field adjoining the Indian agency buildings here. During the recent Indian fair, there gathered here 3,500 Teton Dakotans, many of whom had followed Sitting Bull into battle. But of all the hun dreds encamped on the Sioux county fair grounds, within a stone's throw of the grave of Sitting Bull, few seemed sufficiently interested to make their way through the waist-high weeds to the little rusty iron enclos ure. At the head of Sitting Bull's grave are piled in pyramid form several large boulders. At its foot is a sim ple marble stone which bears this in scription At least a half-dozen lives were lost in this episode. That more lives were not sacrificed was due to the foresight of Major Fetfhet in shelling the brush which surrounded Sitting Bull's cabin. And the young shave-tail lieutenant in charge of the battery whose shells sent hostile Sioux scurrying like rab bits from the bush, was Enoch II. Crowder, now provost marshal gener al of the United States. T-.yJyH—aaa. a .* J,- SIOUX INDIANS IN MOVIKS North Dakota Ranchman Secures Films of Sioux Tribal Life and Customs Bismarck, N. D. The "Y-O" larch, one of the Missouri valley's greatest show places, may become as famous in tihe moving picture world as is the Oilier Brothers' "101" ranch in the Panhandle district. C. P. Burnsted, owner of the "Y-O'' which comprises some 40,000 acres of fine grazing and alfalfa lands on both sides of the Missouri, including eight sets of ranch buildings, Will complete at the Standing Rock Indian fair at Fort Yates a 5,000 foot picture which is believed to he the most elaborate piece of pictorial publicity which the Northwest has ever been given. For this picture Mr. Burnstad has utilized the services of his own outfit of rough riders, and he has 'succeeded for the first time in seceuring the consent of full-blooded Sioux Indians to perpetu ate on the lilm their tribal dances and domestic, political and military life. At Fort Yates, by special arrange ment with Superintendent Kitch, noted chieftains of the Teton Dakotah na tion posed before the moving picture camera for "close-ups", and the braves .wOio may have followed Sitting Bull on the ill-fated campaign which cul minated in the massacre of Custer and his men, staged their war dances, ghost dances and other tribal cere monials. There will be more foot age, too, of prominent Indian writers whose names are known in every round-up center in the Northwest, and with the several reels of pictures which Burnstad hi ready has had made, he believes he will have a most com plete and a decidedly interesting sym posium of twentieth century life on the last frontier. Aside from Percherons and Here fords, Burnstad has but one hobby— the motion picture. He has paid for hundreds of feet of film which has been sent East and "exhibited free of charge through educational, agencies. Recently, as a token of tiheir es teem, the Sioux of Standing Rock reservation, formally adopted the "Y-O" ranch king, conferring upon him the name of their gretest chief tain, Gall. In celebration of this event Burnstad hopes to make the film which he is now completing the greatest of all Indian pictures. The man who killed Sitting Bull, Red Tomahawk, did not attend the Standing Rock fair this year. Tomahawk was a member of the Indian police despatched to Sitting Bull's home to arrest him during the Messiah craze in 1890. Sitting Bull grew angry. Some say that he drew a gun, or that he signaled to his re tainers to fire. Red Tomahawk took no chances but drew his revolver and fired.
