STUBBINS, Clerk CHRISTIAN CO-OPERATION IN WORLD RECONSTRUCTION Key Note in Great Intercfiurch' Con ference at Grand Forks Last Week. About three huhdred ministers, of more than a dozen denominations, rep resenting many thousand members, were present at the Interchurch meet ing in Grand Forks last week. It is the first meeting of the kind in the history of the state, and marks the beginning of a new era*in religious cooperation and achievement. iLeading pien of different denomin ations put on the program, by ad dresses, charts, maps, and lantern slides, they gave a survey of the world situation. The whole part by countries, states, counties and com munities is being studied, and the re sults from time to -time given to the public. The results of a preliminary study wer$ presented at the Grand Forks meeting. The facts presented were startling indeed. For instance, there are 70,000,000 people in the heart of Africa without a missionary, and without a ray of light from Chris tian civilization. In India there are 42,500 baby girls under one year of age who are married, and 25,000,000 widows in India who are treated as slaves and outcasts. There are 200, 000,000 people in the world who are always hungry, one half of the world's population without doctors or hos pitals, and 1,200,0000,000 who are il literate. Religious education is es sential to the aevelepoment of a well rounded life, and safe citizenship in a democracy, yet there are 27,000,000 under twenty five years of age in the United States who are receiving no religious instruction, and 25,000 of that number are in the state of North Dakota. The Intercfhurch World Movement is not a new organization, but is rather a movement to secure coopera tion of all the churches so that there may be given the impact of all churches doing the same thing at the same time. In educational, mission ary, and benevolent enterprises .at home and abroad it is designed that all should act together. The over head expenses of the Interchurch act ivities will be provided jointly by the cooperating denominations, but never to exceed five percent of the money raised. The Centenary of Methodism cost less, than three percent, and in the Helena area only 1 2/10 per cent for the whole campaign. Each de nomination will raise its own funds, secure its own recruits for service, and carry out its program along its own denominational line, but all branches of the church working on the same task, and thru the clearing house of the Interchurch, overlapping pre vented, and no place neglected. Dr. C. L. Clifford who was one of the men attending from Minot, con siders that this movement marks a new era in the moral and religious re construction of the world. The plan is comprehensive, constructive, and on a scale gigantic enough to be com mensurate with the crying needs of humanity. In the financial drive which is more than a dollar for every minute since Christ was born. The convention at Grand Forks was similar to those being held in every state in the union, by seven groups of men carefully selected for that purpose. These will be followed by similar conventions to be held in every one of the 3012 counties in the United States. The Ward county convention will be held in Minot the week following Easter. This will of course be largely attended by peo ple from every part of the county. COM. BOWKER CIRCULATES PETITIONS FOR PAVING City Commissioner Securing Signa tures Withf Understanding That Cost of Paving Does Not Exceed $50 per 50-Foot Lot per Year. Dan W. Bowker, city commissioner, is circulating petitions favorable to paving the 44 blocks in the southeast ern part of the city, stipulating that the work be not done if it costs more than $50 for each 50-foot lot per year. The petitions against paving, sign ed by approximately 170 property owners in the district affected, were filed with the city auditor Tuesday. Those who signed the protest did not do so with a view of retarding the wheels of progress, but figure that it would only be good business to wait until the cost of paving, which is now at the top notch, would drop somewhat or until this section of the state1 re ceives a good crop or two. Seventh Day Adventist Churcb Notice The series of lectures delivered at the church at the north end of the via duct, on "The Hand of God in History" will reach the climax of the series next Sunday evening in the discussion of the topic, "The Day of the Lord. How will it be introduced. How long will it last, and what part will the devil play in the drama?" All are welcome at these services. Sabbath school Saturdays 2 p. m. Church services 3 p. m.
