Tenor, former governor of Pennsylvania, chairman of the subcommittee on na tional headquarters, and Joseph T. Pan ning of New York, its secretary. Chas. Wisen Writes Letter From England Chas. Wisen, prominent Bcrthold farmer, who left Minot last fall ac companied by his wife, has written the Independent an interesting letter from England. The Wisens will spend nearly a year visiting Mrs. Wisen's relatives in England and at Mr. Wis en's former home in Sweden. The let ter follows: 84 Weldon Crescent, Middlesex, Harrow, England. The Independent, Minot, N. D. Dear Friends: When I left Minot you made me promise to write to you. I have been very slow in fulfilling my promise. Really, I have seen so many .interesting things since I left don't know where to commence. We had a fine trip all the way across, but I have seen very little of the sun since leav ing North Dakota. We were on the boat from one Saturday to the other on the "Olympic" of the White Star line. We landed in Southampton about 3 o'clock p. m., but it took till after 8 before the special train left the station for Waterloo station, Lon don. All baggage had to be taken care of first and then our passports had to be.examined again and a land ing card issued to each passenger and the customs to go through. We had time to send a telegram to friends in Harrow to meet us at Wat erloo, and when we arrived they were right there. We had to take a bus to Baker street station to get a train for Harrow. We got here at 11 o' clock p. m., all tired and hungry, as we had had nothing to eat since noon. But we soon had a splendid meal. Harrow on the Hill (as it is called locally) is noted for its splendid schools. It is a city of about 27,000 inhabitants and on a hill 400 feet high a mile long and a quarter mile wide. One street called the High street, where all the schools are. It is really nice and picturesque up there. A good many of the men in Harrow work in London. They go by train morning and night. They buy season tickets, which is much cheaper. Har row is 9 Ms miles from Baker street station, that is well in London, but if one wishes to go farther one must take either the street car, bus or un derground railway, which they call the tube. By the way,, there is a won derful underground system. They have no conductors on the trains. One buys a ticket, goes either to the lift, "elevator," or escalator, "moving stairs," where a guard stands to punch the ticket. The tube must be all of 75 feet deep, as it goes under the river Thames—and what a rush to get in the trains. They have what is call ed the inner circle and all lines lead to it. It was a woman from the coun try some time ago rode on the inner circle, and every time she tried to get off she was pushed in again. She rode around seven times before she finally got gff. I fully believe the story is true. As London is an old city there nat urally are many places of historic in terest, which I might speak of one at this time, "The Tower of London.", a castle founded by William the Con queror in 1078 it covers 12 acres of ground, by the banks of the river Thames. As we walked along the river we saw the "Traitor's Gate," in the white tower are kept old arm ors, swords, guns, in fact war mater ial of all descriptions and in the "bloody tower," where the prisoners were beheaded, were instruments of torture of all kinds, and at another place are the crown jewels. We have been to quite a few Sal vation Army doings and I like to speak of one festival there were 11 bands present and they certainly tried to outdo each other, about 200 bands men and they played enmasse, too. I never have heard anything like it. It was grand. I could not help but think if they can produce such won derful harmony here, what will Hea ven be like? We are enjoying our visit and as our relatives live in different parts of London we get around quite a lot. We get the Independent fairly regular, altho sometimes we miss a copy. It is like getting- a long, newsy letter from home. Very respectfully yours, CHAS. TXB SPXOB or un Caller—"Doctor, have you ever treat ed a patient for loss of memory?"
