ISiBSwiiSiSBSHy® Additional Editorial The city campaign this year is to be along business lines largely. The moral element will not enter much I into the campaign. A type of eandi date will no doubt be selected who is expected to use his best efforts in law enforcement, anyway. The church element will be satisfied to rally round a candidate with these qualifi cations. Practically every property owner is anxious to have his taxes re duced. He'll be pretty certain to sup port the candidate who can give tikej most reasonable assuranc# that he'll' work for some relief. The people will support some hard headed business! man for president if he will step for ward and show that he is willing to go. It isn't every businessman who can afford to take a position of this kind. The salary is only $75 a month and to do the work right will require much of his time. He should be in a I position to run the business in the same manner he would conduct his own and should be in a position to' tell everybody who don't like his style to jump into the lake. He should talk the affairs of the city over with the people, in open meetings occasionally and get their views and suggestions.' ..^ ..^^.....•...,v.^,^.^^1^rT,^irrTT^T^,..,_ A USEFUL CITIZEN The death of E.' Ellison, pioneer merchant, who passed awajir at his home Wednesday, removes from vour I midst one of Minot's most lovable and useful citizens. The writer remem bers well when Mr. Ellison arrived from Fargo, where he had long been a merchant, and opened his little store in this city. He started in with a limited capital and at the time there was a question whether an ex elusive store of that kind would pay in a city of a little more than a thousand population. Mr. Ellison proceeded carefully, feeling his way, I so to speak, improving and enlarging! I his store as our city and territory de-' veloped, being able eventually to re-! view his life's work with complete Sat isfaction. Here is an example of a man who might be said to- have at tained success after he had passed the half century mark. In his earlier I life, however, he must have laid the foundation for it, which ser.ved him I I so well in his later years. The entire northwest mourns the demise of this quiet- unassuming capable man who has gone to his reward. A financial statement should be pub lished at least every three months. We have a right to know how our money is being expended. He should be con servative and economical, but not ret roactive should see that we get a dol-1 lar's worth for every 100 cents ex pended. If a man with these qualifi cations can be brot forth, the people will rise uj^andjcalMiimblessed. During-1920, the Ward County In dependent paid out in wages $26, 475.63. This money was distributed among thirteen families and the money was either all spent here as living expenses or invested in Minot homes. The money which the people of Minot spend with the Independent for advertising, job printing and sub scriptions, remains in Minot. We merely help to give it circulation and it is returned to you, together with large sums that come from outside of the city. This might afford a little lesson in buying your printing at home. Not so many merchants send out of town for their printing as they formerly did, but still far away pas tures always look green, and we are sorry to say that there are a few otherwise good folks who imagine that they do a little better by sending out I of the city for their printing. It's a mistake, fellows. Be better citizens than you now are and leave your printing in Minot. You dont' need to I get it all done at this office. We have several other very good shops in Minot that will appreciate some of the work you have been ordering from out-of town as much as we would. "Cheer up. There's no hard times coming.
