A packed house tells the merits of the production which was the opening of a three nights engagement in this city. It may justly be §aid that a number of Minot.opera lovers were somewhat suspicious regarding the quality of the Columbia Opera company, nnd hence did not attend the Tues tl'iy -evening performance. This tear was no doubt caused by the fact that local people were badly duped several mouths ago when tkey gave up their good money to witness, what tliey supposed was to be a first, class presentation of light opera by the Andrews Opera "company. However, if there were any in the audience last evening who might have entertained such fears they were soon dispelled and when the company had finished its first chorus'the audience realized that that they had at last been given the long looked for opportunity of witnessing something of a high order. The opportunity was thor oughly appreciated and the pres entation was accepted with hearty applause as the! various stars made their appearance. It is but fair to Manager N Holmes to state that the company i, work "v i- which he presented here last even- ing is unquestionably ihe best dese^W^f i»iLatlT88 sentfttive audience which gathered to spend a delightful evening listening to Said. Pasha." Stanley Felch. the comedian, is as funny as ever and tlis "Willie Collier, the second," kept the andience in.an Uproar of laughter. His jrresistable face and basso de profundo voice were features of the production and whenever there was something wanting, this star was alwaos there with the goods. Miss Charlotta Gilman, the prima donna, late of the Foxy Quiller company, made her first appearance here last evening and her work was never below the stan dard. She was in perfei-t voice and her Rendition of that famous Burgomaster ballad, "I love Von," called forth prolonged applause. For a tenor of ability, Mr.'C. N. Holmes, is the best who ever ap peared in Minot. He won the andience in his first appearance upon the stage when he sang the .'•DesertSong in a very beautiful manner. This selection gave Mr. Holmes an excellent chance to display his cultivated voice. The andience was not satisfied with °w-^ition'and.?e Bayiield. Bryant* president of-the Geographical Society of Phila delphia, under whose direction the ex periment was made. A report of their wanderings was made by Mr.. Bryant at the monthly meeting of the society in Witherspoon hall.. These casks were two of 37 set adrift at various points in the Arctld regions during thfe summers" of 1899, 190& and X901. The idea originated with Ad miral Melville, who suggested it tQ the society in 1S'97. One of these casks w'qs found by fishermen on .the northern coast -of Si beria early last summer. They passed it on to civilization when, the oppor tunity-arose and officiate of one of fhe Siberian towns returned .the inclosed papers to Philadelphia. Each of the casks .contained letters 'in all known languages, requesting the, finder to fill out the blanks, giving date and place and other information, and to" return the papers to Philadelphia. Money for frestage was inclosed in every cask. This cask was found only 380 miles from where it was set adrift six years ago, 95 miles northwest of• Randall's Island., Its course waa In an entirely different direction from what had been expected. The second cask recovered: had drift ed -from Cape'Barrow on the. Alaskan coast, where it had been left- on floe Ice,, to the northern coast .of Iceland, and was recovered by sheep herders a few months ago. It proved without" doubt what was partly demonstrated by Nansen's ship, the Fram, and the Jeannette that a newly found current flows over or around the pole, coming down between Spitsbergen and Green, land into the northern Atlantic. In the direct line over the p^lar cap the cask was 2,500 miles from its starting point, but it'had probably drifted in a circular course -more than 8,000 miles. KING OUSTED FROM ESTAT^ Emperor' Francis Joseph Has Svlcted from Avuitria-Hun gary Hunting Seat. Paris.—Emperor Francis Joseph has been evicted from a hunting estate,in. Hungary. The emperor had-for some years past leased from the municipal ity of Budapesth an estate at Godollo, where he has been in the habit oi spendiflg a month or two pvery au tumn. The l«aae Ikeiag on the point of ex piration,. the municipality, in reply ta the emperor'Sr request for Its renewal, dispatched a message to the imperial eoiirt eurtty stating that they had de cided ta put up the estate for public auction. His. majesty, tferough the medium&f a representative then made an offer' for the renewal of the lease, but was out bidden severkl times by other intend^ ing tenants^ until the .price had risen to enormous proportions. On behalf of the emperor, the depu-' ty, M. Hedervary,- then proposed a. compromise, and asked that the mu nicipality should bind itself-not to per mit any hunting in the locality during the emperor's sojourn at the Villa de Godollo, which is his majesty's private property. This request was flatly refused, the municipality formally declaring that "it could not compel the population to show so much consideration toward the sovereign." The syndicate formed for the acqui sition of the estate thereupon deposit ed £4.000 with the municipality to ward the rental, the .chairman'declar ing that the property shonld be with drawn- from the emperor's tenancy at W ^1' sifiji 1 inch Moline WhkbwiU i'iv .. *. the handsom •li ri An old subscriber of the Inter Ocean states that he thinks Miss* Mabel Daeley is the^first young lady to marry who was born in Ramsey county.
