Kt meta gentleman the other dajr who informed ua that he eaine to this Territory, reoently, etpeeting to run for untie had beea tnftnncd that there was a scarcity of candidates for otnee here. When told the actual state of things that man's dejected countenance ww a sight never to be forgotten, flow true is the saying that this Is a world of disappointments. Butler and Kelly are not going to give the Deinocratio ticket a very strong support. They may not repre present much principle, but they do represent no mean' fraction of the Democratic vote of Xew York, Con necticut and Massachusetts. For them to sulk and bolt means a considerable defection. The enthusiasm for Blaine coupled with Cleveland's weakness in hi* own state will give the latter any thing but a walk over in New York. The farmers' convention of the Red Kiver Valley met at Moorhead last Tuesday. A. Garnett, of St. Thomas, represented Pembina county and was chosen as one of the vice-presidents and a member of the committee on legislative affairs. A discussion took place on the advisability of forming a farmers' party, but a majority agreed that it would be better policy to work within the lines of the present two political parties. Farmers were urged to take an active part in the caucuses and elect delegates from among them selves. At the conventions they would then be able to nominate can lidates friendly to their own interests. The farmers of the Bed River Val icy are making good progress towards loins away with the necessity of tin *rting butter, beef and pork. It is Grange that even at this date we have not a sufficient home production of these commodities. But the country :s Represented. -Pembina, Dak. With a larger supply of flouring mills we shall seethe last sack of flour in ported, dome production and home manufac ture to their fullest extent will bring Dakota to a position of great promin mce in the sisterhood of states. Let us get done with paying freight on commodities so easily producable at home. An associated press despatch states that Secretary Frellnghnsen has In structed by eaMe the eonsniar oflenrs a London, Liverpool, Marseilles, Havre, Bordeaux, Bremen and Ham- !it»rg to at oaoe appoint competent Inmarti all TM»1« ml avengers departing for the United States from the ports mentioned. The •onsniar officers referred to are In. s' meted to refuse clean bills of health all enses except upon recommenda tion of the sanitary inspector that such ills be given. The consuls are la ntructed to report by cable any ease of infectious or contagious disease known coexist on board a vessel at the time »f her departure for the United 8tates. This course is adopted in order that the health officers of onr porta may have timely warning of approaching danger, and be prepared to take such measures as shall prevent the scourge from gainings foothold in this country. It is probable under the authority con ferred by the contagious disease clause of the legislative bill, medieal examin ers will be appointed, as attaches to American consulates at the French ports infested with cholera, whose duty it will be to report periodically upon the progress of the disease. There is beginning to be a little stir in county politics, so called. But really, politics has little to do with the question. It is largely a matter of personalities. Discussions bear main ly on personal fitness or unfitness for this, that or the other office. Prefer ences are In many cases based on mere likes or dislikes, while, it is hoped, there are m#uy Who take into consider ation the important question of having the various offices properly and effici ently lilted. Most of the talking so far. Is done, either by the varioui can didates themselves, or by those who have little else to do but express them selves on any anbject that wiU com mand a listener. Let the disenssioii goon. In the meantime the "silent majority" are beginning to revolve these matters carefully in their minds *o that between now and November the people of Pembina county will not likely aeglect to get such light as they may desire to enable them to exercise their choice intelligently. There seems to be a disposition generally, to make every man who desires office stand up and be measured. Let the ever multiplying number of candidates gird themselves for the trying ordeal. And we bespeak for thema reasonable charity, as well as a careful scrutiny on the part of the people. We cannot say less than this. At present we do not care to say more. The ?i\i Vlokle Hat* Show.
