Friday, December 15, 1950 Critic Evaluates Concert Of Helen Phillips In BY CARL DITON FOR ANP NEW YORK (ANP) In another one of its community cultural ges tures, St. Mark's Methodist church presented soprano Helen Phillips, formerly of St. Louis, last week. Miss Phillips fulfilled all the ex pectations arising from the her alding of previous performances. Her lyric voice, capable too of eolorature, is surprisingly even thruout its lengthy range, rich and full at the bottom and of pearl like consistency at the top. Her approach to tile text is most in telligent The flexiblity of her lips lends greatly to the poetic quality of her diction. The emotional drive of her utterances is so intense that even in a little expression like "1 faint" which occurred in her open lt»g song, she could not stem it. IPhen, too, a revolving posture speaks well for Miss Phillips' pos sibilities in opera, wMch calls for bodily movement. The singer's first effort consist ed of Dowland's "Come Again" "Sweet Love" and'Bach's "Sigh ing, Weeping". Stage announce ments are rarely satisfactory be cause of inaudibility, especially when they are in foreign tongues Fortunately we were close enough to catch Galuppi's "E Viva Rosa Bella" sung in place of Mozart's "Allelujah". Robert Schaffifttm's "Seft feh Uita Gesehen" and "Er Der Herrlich ate von Allen", followed. Here Kiss Phillips sought to guard against interruption thru applause by announcing that these songs were from the master's "Lieben DUCKY'S CLEANERS ME-2071 925 DENNISON PICK-UP and DELIVERY & MARKET 2246 Germantown WE DELIVER Christmas Trees Wreaths, Fruit and Baskets Meats Nuts of all kinds Candies ADDIE'S RIB HOUSE (Former Ken's Rib Hodie) Fitch & Dunbar OUR SPECIALTY Ribs Shoulders- Fish Assorted Sandwiches Soup* Malts BREAKFAST DAILY OPEN 6 A. M. to 3 A. M. FOR QUICK DELIVERY CALL ADAM 0659 ADDIE HARRIS Prop. New York and Leben" song cycle. After these, she sang Ich Grolle Nicht and Brahms' "Wir Wandolten and Meine Liebfe ist Gruen". The aria L'Altra Notte" from Boito's Me fistofelo" marked the end of the first part of the program. From then on, th musical in terest seemed to lag somewhat. Perhaps it was due to a throat irritation that persisted thruout the evening. Connoisseurs may differ as to final sounds of German words but we are fairly certain that a round er and more penetrating resonance of Miss Phillips' French vowels would add much to her already ideally matured art. This was un fortunately lacking in Widor's "A1 bayde". Staub's "L'Heure Delici ous" and Faure's "Flour Jetee". After singing Samuel Barber's "Sleep Again", Hoist's "Heart': Worship" and John Work Jr.' "Soliloquy", the little throat an noyance forced the singer to leave the ptage for a moment. Upon re turning, the program came to Loads of last-minute gifts arriving every day to make your Christmas shopping easy Farm Dell Nite THE OHIO DAILY EXPRESS conclusion- with William Grant Still's "Here's One", Work's "This Little Light of Mine" and the late Dett's "Ride On, Jesus". There were many encores includ ing "Vio Le Sapete" from Mas cagni's "Cavalleria Rusticanna". Kelly Wyatt gave accompaniment al support. Incidentally, We may never know the incalcuable" impetus the Negro church gave Negro musical art ii4 years past. Since there are so many well-established Negro churches today, would it not be a fine sequel to' continue that en couragement by presenting those among Negro musical artists who have achieved successful, accredit ed downtown debuts?
