(A N£) Improper moral conduct among the students at Lane col lege was hinted this week as the cause of the acceptance of the res ignation of the school's president, Dr. D. S. Yarbrough, by the board of directors. Bishop J. Arthur Hamlett of Kansas City, Kan., chairman of the board, made the following statement in the presence of Dr. Yarbrough: "For the last year or more the board of directors, and particu larly the chairman of the board, have received a flood of com plaints regarding the moral atmos phere and the conduct on the campus. These complaints have come from all over Jackson and west Tennessee. "The chairman of the board has taken every occasion of a public meeting in and around Jackson to declare the approval of the board of the work being carried on by Pres. Yarbrough, and their wholehearted support has been pledged over and over again, only to be criticized more severely and more widely for such support to what was going on on the campus." For the board's position in ref erence to Dr. Yarbrough and to Dr. P. R. Shy, who at the last board election was not voted back to position as dean of students, it received criticism of the stu dent body through William C. Jackson, president o fthe stu dent council. Bishop Hamlet explained that Dr. Shy had be'en returned to his post as professor of social science with a $300 raise but that the election of dean had been post poned. He added that Dr. Yar brough would return to Wilber force State college where hi would head the sociology depart 7 '41 i The bishop, when questioned On the succe&Sorto Dr. Yairbrou&h, said that no member of his fam ily would be supported for the position. When Dr. Yarbrough sug gested his son-in-law, the Rev. W. A. Miller, the bishop said: "Under no circumstances will I support any member of my fam ily for the position." Some people had recoftim$nded his son, J. A. Hamlet, Jr., the bishop said. Also suggested for the office was J. R. White, head of the Negro school in Whiteville, Tenn. The bishop made no com ments on him.
