Under the little, scraggy trees that cast a scanty shade on Grape Grovo ceme tery, an aged man, in a paint-spotted blouse and overalls marred by the wear of years, stood at the graveyard gate yesterday as ho welcomed 500 persons. "I'm glad to see you mighty glad," was the greeting to each newcomer as ho extended tho gnarled and knot ted hand with which ho had toiled throughout his life. "Come right in to tho cemetery and in a few minutes we'll all go over to tho grave." Days ago Fiaucls Marion Buff en barger ho who stood at tho grave yard entrance Issued invitations to his funeral. Cards announcing the event were sent to every -person liv ing within a radius of 10 miles from Grapo Grove. That only 500 attended today was duo solely to tho fact that Grapo Grove, in the northeastern part of Greene county, has no railroad and that Grapo Grovo neighbors some tiroes llvo miles apart. It was early in the morning that tho first of Buffenbarger's guests arrived. Some walked, some drove. By after noon, tho party had assembled and Buffenbarger had opened his obse quies. First, the entire assembly, headed by the corpse, walked from tho cemetery gate to the Buffenbarger grave the shallow excavation whoso digging Buffenbarger himself had superintended. Tho grave viewed and tho proper praise bestowed, Buffenbarger led tho procession to a grove besldo the road and opposite tho cemetery. There Buffonbarged discarded his blouse, spotted with daubs of yellow paint, and donned a coat of rusty black. Then ho mounted a platform which he himself had buildcd and made a speech. In a way, the speech was Buffenbarger's own funeral sermon, for when ho dies no sermon will bo preached. "Bo good and ready to die," ho coun seled. "Even as I have prepared for death, so should you. Beware of sud den death. Beware of automobiles and every other invention of tho dovil." Aftor Henry Dorn and Dean McCal lap had made brief addresses, Buffen barger cast aside all aspect of solemn ity. "Tho funeral's over now lot's have some fun," ho said. From a farm wagon Buffenbarger produced innum erable cakes and pies, which he had asked fanners' wives to bake for tho occasion. He passed candy to tho children and cigars to the men. For each little girl ho had a whito hand- kerchief. And ho had a joko for ev erybody. To all his guests he extend ed an invitation to come to tho "real"- funoral, tolling them that It will bo a home-made affair "Just llko this, with no undortakor around to mako folks feel bad." Aftor tho crowd dispersed lato yes terday nfternoon tho old man wont back to his graVo. Ho filled It In and woiked till dark carefully to mound It up, Tho family of IlufTonbarger Is wonlthy. Tho grandfather owned 1C00 acres of rich grazing land about Charleston, Tho eccentric old man who has dug his gravo is woll-to-do himself and was better off In his carllor days. Ho was married once but that's anothor story. Before long tho broken-hearted husband took him self away from homo and slnco has beon living among tho peoplo of Grape Grovo neighborhood. For years he has been a neighborhood figure, going from ono house to another and being treated kindly wherever ho has gono, A numbor of years ago tho aged Mrs. Little, who had soon always tnat Buff had a placo to stay, on her death bed gathered her children around her and mado them each and all promise to seo that as long as any of them had a homo of their own, they would see that Buff had a roof over his head. Mrs. Little was tho mother of John Little, congressman, attorney general of Ohio and noted authority of con stitutional law.
