Word has been received here from the clerk of the district court at Alamogordo that there will not be any November term of court here this fall, for the reason that there is so much court business in Otero and Quay counties and also because there is no judge in the fourth district. The public schools opened here with 20S pupils in attendance. The school census show 350 pupils In the district. The corps of teachers for the present year are Charles Schreck, principal and instructor in the high school; Miss Pearl Taylor and Mrs. E. Massie, inter mediate grades: Miss Jane Brockway, Mrs. Gumm and Miss Laws, primary J grades. United States land commissioner A. H. Harvey is adding a coat of paint to his residence on Alamogordo ave- Mrs. Francis Collier and Mrs. W. K. Collier are visiting at Cloudcroft. Francis Canning has gone to South Bend. Tilton.) Cloudcroft, X. M.. Sept. 15. The en gineers are up surveying the sewer line and laying out a new block of lots. The E. P. & S. "W. will run an excursion up when this block is open and sell off the lots. The work on the baby sanatorium has begun. " Stanley Bovaff was up to superintend the beginning of the work. Those In the surveyor's party are: F. F. Berkett, H. E. Stansbury, E. G. Jones, F. J. Twyhani, and R. E. Mc Kee. The season cannot close, as the "newly weds" keep coming, 'fvro pairs are now registered at the L.odge. The last couple to arrive are Mr. and Mrs. C. T. Meyers, of -Davenport, Iowa. C. A. Redic has been appointed war den for the resort. Mrs. II. D. Slater, who has been ill for several days, is much improved. Mr. Slater has returned to El Paso. Miss Ora Slater, who spent several days at "Camp Jonimac," has re turned to EI Paso. Mrs. Horace B. Stevens has closed "Hillside" for the season. Charles Stevens has named his cot tage "Sandview," named from having a fine view of the white sands. Mrs. McDonald, little daughter, and Mrs. Smith returned to El Paso yes terday after a week among the pines. J. A. Eddy is closing "Rift Point L.odgc" and returning with his fam ily to their home in Denver, after spending three months here. Later the police succeeded in arresting the two offenders. A Mexican family in very destitute A special meeting of the board of directors of the Chamber of Commerce ;was held Tuesday to decide the question of endorsing the Aztec Fire Insurance Co., of El Paso, now organizing in this city. The trustees of this company, J. J. Miindy, Judge J. jVI. Groggin and Richard F. Burges, and several other interested parties, appeared before the meeting o explain" the plans in detail of the organ ization of this home compan3r. ' After thorough consideration by the board, the following resolution was unanimously adopted: ' "The attention of the board of directors of the Cham ber of Commelce has been directed to the general move K ment throughout the west to organize fire insurance com- panies for the purpose of protecting western business, as well as for the purpose of keeping in our midst the large sums of money annually expended on premiums. "The organization of such a company in El Paso has been repeatedly suggested. This board has had the ques- tion' under consideration and while we do not feel that it would be consistent with the functions or the custom of L the Chamber of Commerce "to endorse any special project, wo, .nevertheless, feel that the time is ripe for a movement in this directiorrhy tle people of the Southwest. "TVe believe that fire- insurance companies, if man x aged along business lines, would provealnvei5fenGficial to the community at large and profitable to the indivicEial- investor. On a charge of vagrancy, a white man giving his name as J. IT. Walsh was fined the limit. 200. by judge Tom Lea in police court Wednesday after noon. Walsh was arrested Tuesday 'night in company with George Wash ington, one of the blackest negroes in El Paso, after they had visited sev eral San Antonio street saloons. Wash ington, on the witness stand, testified .-erai that Walsh, after buying him sev drinks, began petting and loving him. The negro is a bdotblack and became intoxicated before the evening was over, he said. He was released.
