Tucker was placed under arrest and brought here where he was lodged in jail today. His examining trial wll be October 1. It is the first case of the kind in north Texas in five jears. The San Antonio and Aransas Pass railroad this morning closed a deal for the sale of 100 miles of 52 pound steel rails to the National Iron and Stdel company. John Ti berg, the young miner who arrived here from Nome last week with $14,435 in gold slugs and was arrested on the charge that he had stolen the gold from the sluice boxes for the Pioneer Mining company, agreed to return to Nome for trial without extradition pro ceedings. The steam ship Umatilla, which arrived yesterday from Nome, brought a cargo valued at $1,000,000. Besides gold, the ship car ried whalebone, furs and walrus Ivory. Other steamers yet to arrive from Ber ing Sea will bring similar cargoes. Chicago, 111., Sept 22. The inter state commerce commissioner, Lane, today indicated at the rate hearing in. progress here that the railroad wnnM have to meet a constantly Increasing cost of operation by some other means than that proposed increase of rates. "As the country develops," said the commissioner, "there will he more and more freight delivered to carriers and by the reasoning of railroad officials here, that means increased cost per unit of service upon which they will demand an increasing scale of rates. I regard it as a serious menace to the western country if the rates are con stantly increased. We must work out this problem on ofther lines. That the Lakes to Gulf Deep Waterway associ ation will give Roosevelt its support if the colonel wants to go back to the white house for a third term is indi cated in a letter to W. K. Kavanaugh president of that organization which mas made public here this morning Kavanaugh bitterly arraigns Taft fbr his attitude towards the waterway project and especially condemns the president for his failure to appoint Ly man Cooley a member of the board of engineers. Gaspar Giron, a passenger on G H train No. 9 Thursday morning, lost a box containing , $200 in cash and a number of endorsed checks. He was coming to El Paso on a business mis sion and alighted from the train at the Stanton street depot, forgetting the box containing the money, which he" left on a seat in the car.
