The Calumet & Sonora Mining: company has begun -work -in sinking: their shaft from the 400 -to the 600 level. Considerable headway is being made and the shaft Is &t-present passing: through some rich ore. On the -00 level recently there has been considerable ore opened up in the west, drift. The ore pitches in a westerly direction and it is expected to find this same ore on the levels be low when they are opened up later. The mill i- running full capacity and with out anyvdifficulties. The San-Salvador property, which ad joins th Alacran mine of the Arlzpe Mines corporation, south of Cananea, is opening: up some rich ore. The shaft is down to a depth of 70 feet and a drift which is being cut zX this depth is In solid ore for a distance, of 22 feet. The pay streak is fron one to three feet In width along the foot walL The values are gold, silver, copper and lead. J. J. Holroan is in charge of the work. The property is owned by him and several associates. The Reeves shaft of the Cananea Boston company is nodown to the 90 loot leveL The formation Is very en couraging. Several experts have been out to the property in the past few days. The Montoyo shaft of the Santa Fe Consolidated Mining company Is show ing up better -with every additional kDt of work done- The drifts on the 20tt level are all in ore for some distance. EI Triunfo Consolidated Mining com pany, operating near Arlzpe, is making headway in the installation of the new smelter. Litigation Settled. The Cadena de Cobre company, which owns property in the Sahuaripa dis trict, has settled all litigation which it has been passing through and work will be resumed the firt of the year. The Tharsis Tork company, operating in the Nacozari district, is constructing a wagon road between the mine and the San Pedro mine. It' will be one and one-half miles in length. The road is built so that the company can haul the machinery it expects to install at its shaft. The shaft will be sunk an addi tional 300 feet, contract for this work having been let recently. A number of Mexican mining men have leased the San Pablo property, near the Pilares mine, in the Nacozari district, for a period of two years. lBta!llBg a Pump. The Democrata mine is installing a 14x7x18 Cameron pump. This com pany is doing nothing at present ex-. cept pump water, and will not resume ! until the price of copper will justify their resuming. Nearly all the properties in the Can anea district have been remonumented eccording to law, except those "which will be attended to next year, as the owners have received a continuation of time from the Mexican government upon payment of a fee. No successor has yet been appointed to succeed' assistant general manager David Cole of the Cananea Consolidated Copper company, who leaves the com pany on January 1, to take charge of the Bay Consolidated at Ray, Ariz. WIL.L SHIP 7.IEERCHAIM TO XEW YOKIv FOR TEST Silver City, N. M, Dec 13. The Dor sey Meerchaum company is getting out a shipment from its mines, near Bear mountain, which will go to New Tork parties, where it wiH be tested thor oughly, and it Is believed that regular shipments will commence from these properties at an early date, as the pro duct of the mines seems to be as nearly pure meerchaum as can be obtained. Contract for the assessment work upon a group of 14 claims owned by the Savanna Copper company and lo cated just west of the city limits, has been let and the work of blasting gives a tinge of business appearance to min ing almost within the city. These claims are rich in iron and silver. rai?niB are the two great creatorsof energy. Completion of surface construction at the Miami plant is rapidly nearing and the date for the first pound of ore to be run through the mill is set at January 1. It was originally planned to put the mill and mine in such shape by that date that there could be a daily production of 1500 tons, but it seems improbable at the present time that the mill will .be in shape in the next three weeks to handle anything like that amoutt of ore. It is 'almost certain, however, that by the first of the new year the concentrator will have one unit In commission and as there are three units per 1000 tons this will mean a daily production of approximately 333 tons. Practically the only remaining piece of installation or construction -at the mill proper to complete one or two units is the erection of a number of settling tanks for the slimes. The power plant is practically com plete, as is the hoisting plant. All that remains to be done is the cleaning up of the engines preparatory to turning oh the steam. The power plant as it stands today contains two generator sets, a 4500 cubic foot air compressor, which is to furnish air for tlyj hoisting machinery, and a condensing pump, which receives the exhaust from the generators and compressor. There will probably be another compressor in stalled when the mine begins active extraction of ore. The town of Miami, located at the foot of a big hill upon which the con centrator is placed, has long been is olatedi in a 'degree, from the mine, due to the fact that there was no di rect road. In the next month or so, however, a "direct road to the mine and concentrator "will be built by the Mi ami Townsite crowd. The sentiment at the Inspiration camp seems to be at the present time one of conservatism and in lieu of the former very extensive underground de velopment more attention is being paid to the testing plant. The various air ferent systems of concentration are pe- ins: tried out and numerous screening tests are being made. If the Miami concentrator is a success, as it will In all probability be, the Inspiration peo ple will have the benefit of a demon stration as to the complete efflciency of that mode of treatment. The underground development has amounted to approximately 1500 feet in the past month. The three shafts, Col orado, Scorpion and Joe Bush, have all been connected and represent an enor mous amount of ore bearing territory. Most of, the work so far done has been near the Joe Bush shaft. Three churn drills are still at work two shifts a day and while two of them are busy blocking out ore, the third is doing work of a more prospecting na ture It is the intention of the manage ment to sink the Colorado "shaft to a further depth of 250 feet and at the j same time to sink the Joe Bush shaft? 100 feet deeper. The work is being car ried on by a force of practically 150 men and the number of linear feet of underground drifting, raising and sink- 1 ing amounts to over 30,000. Starts Two More Canrn unus. He says that thp $750,000 Roosevelt drainage tunnel has been completed at the world famous gold mines, and that it drains from ! the mines and puts between two and three hundred millions of gold in sight which could not be touched because of mine flood. This tunnel is regarded as the most important of the year In Colorado min ing. Connection was made Nov. 18. The tunnel, with its further extensions. Is expected to drain the mines of the district to a depth of 730 feet below the present water level. The total length of the tunnel Is approximately three miles. Phillips, head of the bureau of eco nomic geology of the state of Texas, gives a brief but comprehensive sum mary of the present situation with, re gard to the extensive deposits of iron ore in the eastern part of Texas. On June 15, 1910, the first coastwise ship ment of east Texas iron ore left Texas City for Philadelphia. It consisted of 568 tons and came from Cass county, on the line of the Jefferson & North western railway. The shipment was intended as a test lot to be tried in a Pennsylvania blast furnace, and was not intended as the immediate precursor of other and larger shipments. The results of the test were so favorable that contracts Involving 1000 tons a day can now be placed in eastern Pennsylvania. The Texas Iron and Coal company, with a capital stock of $5,000,000. has oeen organized by New York, Philadel phia and Texas people, and a permit to transact business in Texas will shortly be applied for.
