The census figfures for the state of Texas present a very peculiar situation, peculiar be cause of the fact that the figures show a gain of only 27.6 percent for the en tire state, whereas four great sections of the state have shown an increase in population each of more than 100 per cent. While the census figures reveal the astonishing fapt that no less than 30 counties, mostly in east Texas, have shown an actual decrease in population in the last 10 years, the sections of Texas known as the "Panhandle," the "Trans-Pecos country," "West Texas other than the panhandle" and "central west Texas," show increases in popula tion, respectively, of 324.4 percent, 101.2 percent) 286.8 percent and 109.7 per cent. These sections, showing these great percentages of growth, are all in west Texas, and actually west of aline drawn from a point about 75 miles YOU NEED KIDNEY REMEDY? You may have a sample bottle of this always reliable preparation ly mail free, also pamphlet telling all about it Address Dr. Kilmer & Co., Bing hamton, N. Y. . west of Fort Worth, south to the gulf of Mexico. The census growth of this section of the state, composing all of west Texas shows an Increase for the entire coun try west of that line of approximately 160 percent, as against a total increase for tho entire state of only 27.6 per cent. These figures bring out the fact that outside of the cities there has been a very small population growth in east Texas, while an astonishing growth has occurred in west Texas. An analysis of this growth in west Texas reveals the fact that it has been due to three causes: Reason; of Growth. First The proving of the fact that the Panhandle is- adapted to agricul-j tural conditions, accounting for the almost phenomenal growth of 324.4 per cent in that section. Second Like conditions prevailing in central west Texas and southwest Tex as, account for the growth there. Third To the development of irriga tion farming In the Trans-Pecos coun try is due the accountability for the growth there. Of these, three sections composing west Texas proper the growth of the TransPecos region, while not so large as that of the Panhandle, is the most astonishing and perhaps the most per manent of the three sections, because in 1900 It was thought to, bethe one section ot west Texas where no actual development could be expected, where as today it is almost universally con ceded to be the portion of country where the most may be expected. In 1900 the average citizen of the Trans-Pecos country had little to ex pect so far as a great future for his section of country was concerned, and yet the United States census reveals a growth of more than 10C percent in this territory,' and many people claim that great inaccuracy has occurred in the enumeration of the territory. Big Irrigation Scheme. Today there is a large and increasing number of capitalists who are putting vast -sums of money into great Irriga tion projects and many thousand acres of land are, as a result, being put into cultivation. The cost of ithe operations of the 10 irrigation companies that have done construction work in the Pecos valley in 1910 totals the high sum of $3,564,000, and these plants are in vari ous stages of completion; some of them beinpr as near as 90 percent completed, while others are onlj- 20 percent com pleted. Among the largest of these is the Pecos and Toyah Lake Irrigation 'company, which is capitalized at $1,500, 000. Other large companies building irrigation plants here are: Orient Irrigation companj', cost 750, 000; 35 percent work done. Arno Cooperative Irrigation company, cost 350,000; 70 percent work done. Grand Falls Mutual Irrigation com pany, cost $300,000; 90 percent work done. Porterville Canal company, cost $215, 000; 20 percent work done. Toyah Valley Irrigation company, cost $300,000; 95 percent work done. Imperial Irrigation company, cost $300,000; 20 percent work done. Fort Stockton Lands company, cost $150,000; 25 percent work done. Pwed Rock Canal company, cost $S4, 000; 50 percent work done. Big Valley Irrigation company, cost $68,000; S5 percent work done. Farmers Independent Canal eomnanv cost $50,000; 50 percent work done. t All Of these COmnnnips pro nrnmirtnc water from the Pecos rivei;, except the U'oyan vaney irrigation company, which is getting Its water sunnly from Phan- i torn lake. A large acreage is being put under irrigation from the artesian belt, the proved districts being: At Pecos City, 62.000 acres; at FoVt Stockton, 23,000 acres; at Toyah, 19,000 acres. As development and cultivation ex tends from these towns, wells are be ing put down and the proved belt is constantly being extended. In addition to the flow of the above supply of wa ter, a third supply Is being developed over a vast district of the Trans-Pecos country by water which is being pumped to the surface and used for irrigation.
