SILVER CITY, ,N. M., Aug. 26. Noteworthy developments of the resources of the country 'tributary to this city, and the progress and up building1 of the city Itself since the beginning of the present year, are so numerous and important that little more than a brief summary can be gives' in an" article of reasonable IdBgtfc. Among- oar principal industries, mining- may properly fee classed as of, first importance, cattle raising' second, and farming- third. Coming first under the head of development of mining is the splendid progress made this year by the Chine Copper company, owning and operating extensively the famous copper properties at Santa Rita, 18 mile 'easterly from this city. This company has in & marvelously short time, and largely during the present year, purchased a large number of wa ter' rights and developed an abundant supply of water for all "operating pur poses, has successfully demonstrated the practical, econemlc use of the steam shovel process of raising, for the ilrst time in this section, has tested its large area qf mineralized ground hy1 chuin drilling, has located and bsilt the town of Hurley, and now has practically completed the first 1000 ton unit of Its IHi ton dally" capacity concentrator at Hurley. The accomplishment of the above, to- 1 getber with the continuous develop ment ef ore bodies, more than 45,fl0, 06ft tons of ore being" now blocked out, has been rapidly and wonderfully as tonishing to the' old time miner. The pntire camp, including, as it does, the growing towns of Santa Bita and Hur ley, is literally humming, day and night, with -mining operations and ac tivity in building, and under the con servative, able management of superin tendent John M. Sully is rapidly forging- to the very frost in the mining world. Silver City prospers greatly from the increased business given it by this company and Its numerous em ployes, and, as its concentrates are to he treated under contract at the 131 Paso smelter, the big operations of this company vare of vast importance to hoth this city and El Paso. t IUck Geld Mines. Mining statistics Jef recent years for New Mexico have given first place to Grant county, in the amount of ton nage produced, but first place has been yielded to Socorro ,county in the Talue of ores produced, and this has been largely because of the active operations the entire year of several large gold and -silver bearing properties and the high values obtained from the ores of the Mogollon district, situate 4n Socor ro eountybut tributary to and doing its oulk of business in rthis city. Bt'gular shipments of gbld and sil ver bullion .nd Jiigh grade concen trates, in increased quantities, have been made this year hy the Ernestine, Socorro Mines and other companies, operating in this district, and the pres ent year will undoubtedly show an increased production. The Deadwood company recently made its first ship ment of bullion ana will, in the future, Join the -other regular shippers. The Oaks company, the Mogollon Gold and THE PEACOCK. ' Silver, Maud, and Treasure Mining and Reduction companies are all playing an important part in the development of this rich district, and the develop ment 'of ore bodies by these companies and others has gone along in connec tion with the prpduction, and today there are many thousands of tons of ore blocked out ahead, insuring a steady, regular output for many years to come. This city is the supply point for the district and daily there may be seen large freighting outfits leaving for the 90 miles haul to the big gold impv Yearly this camp pours a large amount of money into El Paso and its commer cial importance is destined to be great er, as the camp develops its wonderful mining- resources. JFHel Oil Saves Mach. Undoubtedly the most important aa well as interesting nrogress made in the camp since the beginning- of thi year has been the practical tryout of fuel oil, first made by the Deadwood company, and the present equipping of the Ernestine and Socorro Mines com panies with large pckwer oil engines, by the "se of which fully two-thirds of the former wood-fuel hill will he saved. The large saving will work a splendid ad'antage to this district afid means its more rapid development. "Vast Copper Resources. In the Burro Mountain district, sit uate 14 miles southwesterly from this city, while very little news has been lately given out by the Burro Moun tain, Savanna, Chemung and Mangas Copper comp.anies, the four largest companies owning and operating prop- HIGH SCHOOL BUILDING. erties in the district, there has been a steady, systematic development of ore and a thorough testing- of the well defined mineral areas owne'd by each, by churn drilling, and as a result these companies . and individual owners as well have demonstrated that not only large bodies of ore exist, but that the ore is of a much higher grade than was thought at first. In fact, the dis trict has been transformed from a low grade into a high grade one, carrying immense ore bodies of the latter. Gen erally then, it may be truthfully stated that the 'present year has 'vitnessed a much greater development of ore and the satisfactory demonstration of its high grade character than during any previous period. On the four big- prop erties millions of dollars worth of un derground wor has heen done and the camp has tens of millions of tons o'f ore developed. Considerable development has bee.i carried on in the Pinos Altos district, pine miles north of this city, by the various owners and lessees, and a qua-i-tly of ore shipped to El Paso, but the most notable step taken in the district 'has( heei the erection of a concen trator of 50 ton daily" capacity by George E. Utter, on his Cleveland group of claims. The concentrator will be started in a few days, and hav ing plenty of water on the property and many tons of ore hlocked out, the plant will be a steady producer of a good grade of concentrates. Other Districts. The Colorado Fuel and Iron com- I " v.Uuwi io cxicusive opera tions in the Fierro district, and makes us large iron shipments as has been usual for several years. In the adjoining- Hanover district much development work has been accomplished this year In the Chloride, Black Hawk, White water and many other districts, lying near this city, operations have .'.cen steadily carried on and 'several very rich strikes have been added. Ship ments have not been regular, or in large quantities, from many of :he smaller districts nearby, but the own ers in all the districts, large and small have this year shown a larger and more implicit faith in the mining pos sibilities and the ore wealth of the dis tricts by continuing, upon a larger and more systematic scale, the prosecu tion of development. In all mining districts, today witnesses a larger area of ore blocked, out and ready for treatment or shipment than at anv former time. In the Virginia and other districts, situate near Lordsburg, in the west ern part of the county, and in the Steeple Itock district, In the norths western, part, the year has witnessed a splendid growth and development. Capital has entered, and with It has begun an era of development. In the former district, the 85 mining com pany is working- extensively and' is making bi-weekly shipments in large quantities. On n Business Basis. Mining in all districts of the" county is being placed upon a sure, -fiusiness-like footing,, and the accomplishments of the vpresent year have been far Mn advance of any other like period. The brief and largely general sum mary above given must plainly show that no backward steps have been taken, no loss of confidence shown and no lack of steady, systematic de velopment prosecuted during the pres ent year, but on the other hand mining has been advanced to a firmer, more business like plane than heretofore ex isted, and the modern methods of min ing, sch as churn drilling, steam shov el process, the substitution of fuel oil' for wood and coal, and uptodate min ing machinery of all kinds, means a larger development, consequently a larger output, and a greater success in mining industry in "this section, and with these, necessarily the growth of Silver City and a larger 'prosperity for , El Faso, te metropolis of this south western country. Using: Underground "Waters. A great sride has been taken by citi zens, Individually, and by a large num ber of companies, in the development of water supplies at various parts of the county since the commencement of the year, and as a result there are three large well drilling outfits contin uing the work of boring wells for do mestic and jirrigation purposes. So soon as it became generally known that deep well boring produced abundant water at almost any place in this section, a great many persons .MMMMiiiFiryyffiiii w 'i f i mi ; pumping apparatus and a large number are continuing to secure their own water supply. The homes of this, city -are now in great numbers supplied by both private and city water, i and the ranches by1 scores have more water than ever heretofore, which enables the cultivation t)f small truck gardens. Many dam diversions along the Gila and M-lmbres rivers ' and at points along different creeks; of the" 'county have been obtained from, the territo rial engineer, all of which means the more rapid development oft the county. The local water company has sp'ent a large amount of moHey) In securing ad ditional water, purchasing a large well drilling outfit of its own. and sinking various wells, one to a depth of 2500 feet. The county is going forward in this direction and muchlrrigation and development along farming lines, while not extensive, in the mountainous re gion, all helps to swell the prosperity of the people. "Dry Farming." The system of 'dry farming has taken a firm, hold upon a large number of ranch owners and the particularly wet season has been the means of these farmers raising numerous crops for the first time upon a larg part of the area cultivated. Some excellent crops are reported in the Whitewater5 and Whiskey creek regions, as well as in many other sections of the county. . Artesiaa "Water. Discovery of artesian water near Cliff, in the early part of the year, has added an impetus to that section of the country and a considerable col ony of dry farmers is developing a large area nearby and along the course of Duck creek. All In all, the county has made wonderful progress along thet lines of Increasing Its farming area, development of water supplies and the obtaining of new ones, at widely dis tributed points, and the diversion of water from streams at matiy places for irrigation and power purposes. Growth of Silver City. This city has had a steady, -almost phenomenal growth, this year in point of building and increased population and new enterprises. ' SILVER CITY, If. BL, STATE Largest Summer 'Hormal in the State assertion may be i easily obtained by reference to the permit records kept by the city clerk, although it is not re- ! quired by city ordinanpe that the amount of each be given In the applica tion, for permit. Going over, these records closely and estimating conser vatively the buildings and improve ments, where amounts were not given in the application, there has been easi ly $160,000 so expended since the com mence ment of the year, not including the amount for the building of tlie new public school building and the equip ment of same, which would, if included, surpass the 200,000 mark. For a town of small size, this undoubtedly denotes splendid growth. Many New Buildings. Among the more important buildings has been the remodeling and repair and equipment of the Corbin building, tor the city's new postoffice. The public generally appreciates this important im provement probably more than any other, aside frrfm the public school building. The Sheridan block, Portcr-field-Warren block,, recently damaged by fire, but being now thoroughly re modeled and repaired. . the Gleason block, and the Swift bjock have all undeVgone needed repairs, remodeling and additions been made. The hand some $20,00 residence of BuCus C. Jackson, the ?10,000 residence of David H. Tulloch, and many others costing less, but handsome in appearance, have been erected this year, or largely 30. Improvements on residence and busi-t ness property by so many different owners have, indeed, given the city an eia -of building actvity not experi enced for several years, and this spirit evidences the faith the citizens have in our little mountain town. The Schutz Bros, new opera house, large and commodious in sll respects, was built the past month. The con--tractors are now busily engaged in building the Boach warehouse on Bul lard street and ground wll be broken shortly for the Goodell business addi tion on Yankie street. Other build ings, will go up before the end of the year in the business section. In May last, the city council ordered NORMAL SCHOOL BTJILBIIf GS. Held Eight "Weeks' Session Here This in IS blocks of cement sidewalks .5fany citizens have voluntarily put in side walks, and for this purpose tlorie many' hundreds of dollars have been spent each month since tne first of the year. The trails here and there across vacant lots are abandoned and ever." section of the city is rapidly securing block after block f well built side walks, and soon both sides of the principal residence streets, as is, the case of the present business streets, will have sidewalks five feet in width and substantially built. All denotes growth and & good civic spirit. The FlHe New Scfcoel. The completion of the new pablic school building, referred to above, has been the one big triumph of the citi zens of the city this year. Bonds for the raising of the necessary funds' were at the first election defeated, hy a de cisive majority, hut the people showed a determination worthy of any city by at once forcing the question, to be again submitted, and when this result was accomplished, each constituted himself a commttee of one and at the second election there was registered an overwhelming majority in favor of the bonds. Today the leading t edu cators of the territory, recently here at our summer normal school, pronounced the building as absolutely superior te any other In the entire territory. If this statement be true, and there is every evidence that It is, then our citi zens have, Indeed, bnllded. well perhaps better than they knew at the time. The present summer witnessed over 28 teachers, every county f the terri tory being represented, in attendance at the eight weeks session of the New Mexico summer school, hel( at the Normal school building here. This was a record breaking attendance and the good, accomplished by the teachers them selves and the advertising favorable to this city given out by the teachrs upon their return home were manifold. In the rural districts greater inter--est in education is noted in the annual repo'tt of the county superintendent. At "Hachita a $4080 public school hulMing Summer. has been completed this . year as& & now one is to he erected, at ae at the new tows of Hurley. Others are under eoBs4der& tion and will be put in as sees am funds are available. Efforts are heiag unitedly made by ihe citizens here 4e have the government assist in the coa struction of a large bridge across the Gila, river, on the Silver City-3tfogoMon road, which road was largely pt in first class condition, this year by con vict labor.
