Y., Aug. 29. (Wall Street) A steady demand for stocks imparted strength to the market dur ing the second hour and the gains made yesterday were increased.. Sell ing orders were 'scattering and it was apparent, that for the time at least, the liquidation had run its course. Statements by the heads of large. western railroads tnax tney am no contemplate reduction of working forces, helped to improve sentiment as did the favorable July reports of Canadian Pacific, Erie, Lehigh Valley and several other roads. Fractional recessions from the earlier high level were made during the second hour with business dwindling steadily as prices fell away. Bonds were steady. Trading was conducted in a listless fashion in the last half of the day. No attention was paid to the move ment of special stock, severa of the industrials moving -widely. Interna tional Harvester declined two points on persistent selling. Missouri Pacific gave way over a point to 39, the lowest price of the, year. In the outside- market spirited 'bidding for Standard Oil sent it up to 645, an over night rise of nearly 5a points. The market closed easy. Active sell ing was resumed in the last hour and the whole list broke sharply. Union Pacific, Southern Pacific, Reading, United States SteeL St Paul, Chesa peake & Ohio, and American Smelting fell one to 1 below yesterday's close. There was some liquidation by holders of Stocks who were disappointed at the action of the market in its early show of strength. MONEY AND METALS. Kew York Qaetatta." 'New York, Aug. 29. The tax for this purpose last year was 2 cents on each $100, but it was found the rev enue from this source was not suffi cient to pay the jurors, as a large deficit had to be met from previous years. The jury fund will be about $30,000 in arrears when the script which is now being called in, Is paid. Besides this, th pay of jurors in creased to $2.50 per aay, will require a larger fund. The amount of tax necessary Is being figured by county auditor J. A. Escajeda, and his find ings will be submitted to the county commissioners.
