Eugene Hennessy has been appointed
a. policeman. Hennessy was'TCormerly a
watchman at the El Paso and South
western building. On July 28, complaint
was filed in the court of justice E. B.
JCcCiinfock by J. L Campbell, charg
ing Hennessy with violating the elec
tion law. The case has not been dis
missed on the court docket and McClin
tock says it has not been dismissed.

morning from Mexico City, after
spending more than a month -with
Francisco I. Madero as his guest. Mrs.
"Viljoen was -with him.
Abolition of any semblance of dicta
torship by the adoption of the French
parliamentary system, in whijch the
president is practically the prime min
ister; elimination of' all forms of mli
tary rule by reorganizing the army
into a small but compact unit, with a
nation wiae naxionui guara, compul
sory education for the masses and the
expenditure of large amounts for pub
lic schools; no reelection to the presi
dency; division of landed estates where
Jthe title is faulty, and the 'establish
ment of a democracy of the people and
for the people, he says, is the policy
Madero wil carry out.
Madero has bought a plantation near
Mexico City, to which Viljoen says he
Intends to retire at the expiration of
his presidential term.
"Madero spoke often and feelingly
of the friendship -which El Paso and
El Paso people had shown in the past
for himself and his cause," he said. "As
soon as he is elected president he will
make a trip to Chihuahua, Juarez and
Sonora, probably passing through El
Paso on his -way to the northwestern
border state."
Gen. Juan .Navarro, the commander
of the forces in Juarez which opposed
Madero's men, is now reinstated in the
army, Viljoen says, and is In charge
of an expedition which has been sent
to Sinaloa to quell the rebellion there.
Navarro, Viljoen says, is a loyal sup
porter of the man who saved his life
in Juarez.

Tuesday
Fourteen pleas of guilty were en
tered in the county court Tuesday
morning. Thirteen, charged with
theft, were sentenced as follows:
R. Maldonado, one day In county
jail; Alvarado Cruz, 20 days; Guada
lupe Magallarez, 10 days; Emillo
Flores, 20 days; Domingo Gomez, 20
days; A. J. Smith, 10 days; Raul Perez,
20 days; Jesus Diaz, 20 days; Earl Cor
caran, 20 days; Leon Reyes, 10 days;
Adamo Maese, 10 days; Ameiino Ro
mero, 10 days.
O. E. Bery, charged with swindling
E. Edmiston by giving him a check
for $35 on the City National bank.
where he had no funds, was sentenced
to serve five days In the county jaiL
R. Malonado, who received the light
est sentence, one day in the county
jail, pleaded guilty o a charge' of
taking a bolt of cloth worth 5 from
J. Laskin.
Most of these men have been in jail
for over a month, and for that reason
the sentences imposed are light.

An aeroplane meet may be one of the
big attractions at the statehood cele
bration. The Curtiss fibers will be in
Ne"w Mexico during the latter part of
September and first of October, giving
exhibitions with the Curtiss biplanes,
and if arrangements can be made with
the Curtiss company the team may be
brought here to fly for the entertain
ment of the territorial visitors to the
statehood celebration.
A meeting of the chamber of com
merce directors was held Tuesday aft
ernoon to arrange for the celebration
and to prepare a list of committees to
complete the arrangements for the big
celebration. Secretary C. A. Kinne and
president J. G. McNary will make their
reports of the trips to Arizona and New
Mexico when the governors of the two
new states were induced to attend the
celebration.
VALENTINE SCHOOLS TO
BEGIN SESSION SEPT. 11
Valentine, Texas, Sept. 5. Valentine
public schools will open September 11.

Frederick TVennerstrom, whose body
was found In the Fox river near Cary
was the hired pilot of a crew of safe
robbers, believed to have committed

Wilson, the woman mayor of Hunne--well,

men, agreed on an issue last night for
the first time. Then the regular coun

and to adjourn for a week. The motion !
was unanimously carried.

French Aviator Killed.
Huelva, Spain, Sept, 5. A French av
iator, M. Le Jarrestier, while flying
here fell 250 feet and was killed. The
motor exploded, setting fire to" the
aeroplane. The aviator was burned to
death. .

according to advices brought by Ihe

of Bogoslof, Shlshaldin and Pavlof, the
famous Aleutian volcanoes, during the
year of 1909 and the fine weather for
observing them, a number of expedi
tions were sent out last summer "to
photograph them, but the weather dur
ing thei present year has been so foggy
that it has been dangerous to approach
the volcanic islands.

follow the trail of James Jeffries, the
pugilist, and Iris brother, John, who
are hunting bear on Kenai peninsula,

illness of Mrs. Jeffries, who is at Los

IS ROBBED WHILE OUT
WATCHING LABOR PARADE
Chas. Switzer, who conducts an auto
mobile shop at 315 Texas street, was
watching the parade Monday morning
from the front, of his shop. While the
paraders were "going by, some one en
tered the rear of the shop and extracted
his watch, a $5 bill and a pocket knife
from his coat hanging on a nail.

Horde of Idle Peons Flock
There Seeking Work

Xearly 500 more Texican , laborers
were the guests of the Ciudad Juarez
officials at lunch Tuesday in the bull
ring, which is now called hotel Campa.
Some of the laborers arrived iii the city
from the southern part of Mexico this
morning and are seeking work while
many of them have returned from the
United States and say that they have
been unable to secure work.
Those who have no place to go have
been allowed to stay at the bull ring
while in the eit'. The laborers who ar
rived from the south Tuesday morning
will go to the United States to try and
find emplojTnent.
The 250 laborers who made the demon
stration in Ciudad Juarez Monday were
fed at the city's expense. The Mexican
consul obtained transoortation for them
J over the Mexican National railroad and
tney returned to their homes in Irapuato
and Yera Cruz on Monday evening's
train.

El Paso Physician Alleged to
Have Deserted Suffer

An American physician from El Paso
is said to have left a, mother whom he
was attending in Ciudad Juarez soon aft
er the birth of a child Monday and as a
result both the mother and. the child
died. The American plvysician was
called to 5 Calle Bamon Ortiz to attend
the Mexican woman and gave her chloro
form while the child was being born, but
when he saw the woman could not live
through the ordeal, he is alleged to have
deserted her.
Dr. Antonio Sarabia. of the Libertad
hospital, was called and, although he ar
rived a few minutes later, the woman
and child had already died. ,

JUAEEZ POLICE TO
BE GIVEN UNIFORMS
The Ciudad Juarez police will be uni
formed during the next few weeks. Ohk
of police Kafael Campa. is now negotiat
ing to have the uniforms made for the
men. Since the new police force has
been in the service they have beea
wearing khaki clothes and helmets, ht
these are not heavy enough ft wimter
wear.
Chief Campa- would like to uniform his
men like the Portugal police, who wear
high top patent leather boots, white
trousers and tight jackets, but the mea
object.
WISH TO HOLD A
MEETING- FOR REYES
The Reyes club's president, Juan Her
nandez, of Juarez, a son of Gen. Hernan
dez who had charge of the federal troops
in Chihuahua city during the revolution,
wants to hold public meetings in the
Juarez streets and have speeches in sup
port of Reyes, but the authorities think
that the meeting might cause trouble
and are loath to let them be held.

A general inspection of the insur
recto troops in Ciudad Juarez has, ben
held on orders" received from Mexico
City by the military authorities. All
of the soldiers were gathered at the
cuartel where their equipment and
guns were inspected by the officers.
JUAREZ POLICE MAKE RAID
AND ARREST TWO CHHCAMEK
Another opium raid was made by the
Ciudad Juarez police Monday night asd
two Celestials were lodged in jail as a
result of beinjr found by the police smok
ing the "hop." The men were heavily
fined in police court Tuesday.
