Saturday September 9, 1911 EL PASO HERALD .:V", S '. .. ; ' " " " ima r., " tdb 11 Copyrighted, 1911, by J. J. Hobinson. many lovely creations, large and small, quaint and smart, hare the milliners designed for our delight: during the last two seasons that it seemed almost out of the ques .tkn that even Paris could offer any thing new for Fall. Yet here they Ore -with -as, the new models, seem ing, a ever, smarter aad more bravely fine titan the -old. Also, alas, they are 10 unlike any former fashions that rwoflettlBg hurt year's hat for This year Is altogether out of the question. The most radical departure from all recent aalKMry precedent is the very high, poiated crown,' narrow brim, "Pierriot" sbape, which is the real atyie aete f the day. These crowns are rarely lias than ten, inches in height; ad Tery often onore. They are very aarrow, even, at the base, and taper to a rounded or flattened conical top. rThe brims are ,aetsally piached la a poke across the front, or at the back, and sojsetioaes they are ,poked at both sides, being plain, back and front. This high, narrow, conic or' Piecriot" shape is a very practical ne, as it fits the head well. It is de signed to be worn, withoat Tats, puffs r aay distended, artificial coiffure ar-raBcement These old-fashioned bonnets are some times edged about with fringe, a trimming in perfect barmony with their lines. They are usually made of velvet, and the sheltering brims are lined or faced with taffeta, or satin. Velvet, by the way, is the material par excellence for the fashionable winter hat. It is used both on pressed and hand-made shapes, alone and in combination with satin, taffeta, hat ter's plus and fur felt Uncut velvet is a novelty, both for hats and trim mings, Tery rich in appearance, but more resembling cord silk than ordi-i nary velvet All kinds of silks and velvets are employed in the, fashioning of winter hats and bonnets, satins, corded silks, moires, and plushes having been rein forced by the advent of taffeta, Into the millinery field. The vogue of taf feta gowns, trimmed witb fringes,. which took Paris by storm during the late summer, h& given an impetus to this fabric for winter millinery. Hats lof felt and velvet are faced with taf feta, and taffeta is sometime pressed upon the upper Bides of hats "with felt or velvet facings. French crepe is new as a material for hat facings, and affords a delight fully soft and becoming background for. the face. The .head sizes of the new hats remain large, and though a bit closer than1 of late seasons, they still allow the hats to sink well over the face. For all practical purposes this will be quite a ribbon season, as 'very -wide, plain and fancy ribbons are used ex tensively as trimmings for hats of all kinds. Particularly is this true of the new, high-crowned, narrow-brimmed hats, which are very generally trammed with ribbon. Ribbons show some very handsome new, double-faced ef fects, the reverse 'side of brighter hue appearing in a. band upon the upper side of darker color. These ribbons are trimmed about the new high crowns, fold upon fold, with these bright edges at each fold, and meeting in a. blag ae&m in front. The crown is thus entirely covered, and at the back risea a wired crest of ruffled rib bon, in plume effect, very full and fluffy, and upstanding to an even greater height than the crown of the hat. Velvet and silk are also arranged on tbeaa hats, in the same fashion as ribbon, or in short, sharp, up-standing bows, covering the crowns and simu lating wings. Wings, fancy fett&erg, and aigrette (t ' ' aF- AUTUMN EXHIBIT OF ERNESTS MILLINER Y We cordially invite the ladies of El Paso jaM vicinity to inspect our display of Smart Hats for immediate wear Paris and New York designs, along with clever conceptions by our own artists, will" be of interest to every admirer of pretty Millinery. Ostrich plumes, of the French variety, or uncurled, bave re placed the drooping willows. With the sale of aigrettes prohibited in this! country, various substitutes are being devised that will give the ame effect f of feathery spray. Very "pointed wing effects - prevail, and on the new conic or clown hats, they are trimmed all about the crown with points upstanding. Whole, conic crowns of masses of small wings are another favorite arrangement Ostrich bands are often used to cover the high crown with a finish of up standing French tips at side or back. .Cootie f eather are again the mode and are being wired and braced into all 'manner of upstanding -cocade effects. Paradise feathers, too, are again high style, and will therefore no doubt be even more expensive than formerly. Very few flowers are used, though one sees a few velvet pansiee and clusters of velvet fruits. Some huge poppies and roses are employed to form the entire crowns of high hats, the petals extending downward upon the brims. These mammoth Sowers are all of a foot across, and in uncut velvet they are decidedly handsome. Wool embroideries and wool ap plique, -in soft, bright colors, are sometimes applied on hand-made hats. They are especially pretty on the deep brim of the quaint, old-fashioned poke bonnet As to colors, hats are quite gener ally modest, purples, prunes, browns, greys, navy and black predominating, with touches of royal ble, emerald green and coronation red, a deep cer ise, in the trimmings. Kany amart hats are all in dark, dull tooes, alH black, grey, navy' or navy and' greyt combined, and plain -xaspe.
