Did it ever occur to you that a town that is willing to spend ten thousand dollars a year
in advertising must have something to advertise?

in one year built public buildings aggregating
in cost $95,000.00, and installed a $40,000.
sewer system must be backed by the unvary
ing and deep-grounded faith of its citizens?
When private citizens of a town of 2500
people begin to build twenty, thirty, forty and
fifty thousand dollar buildings, is it not fair
evidence that such citizens are pretty thor
oughly convinced of the future of the town?

er, this species being as scarce in Deming as
that variety for which Diogenes searched
with a lantern in ancient Athens.
Now, consider this proposition for .a
moment sensibly, granting that if you are pre
disposed against this section, that you may

the hardest of suppositions to drive into the
headof the average man or woman; but just
for the sake of argument, suppose that such
predisposition on'your part is wrong. . Then
consider this right quick. Communities, as a
whole; are rarely deceived. A united, active,
, aggressive, optimistic community is all . but
i overwhelming evidence that its prosperity is
, upon; a substantial basis. Is it easier for you
to suppose that a whole community of thou
sands of people who are thoroughly familiar
with conditions are in error regarding the pos
sibilities of this section, than to grant that you,
Mr. .Doubter; basing your single and unsup
ported assumptions on hearsay, are wrong?

ful city in the Southwest; and as acre after
acre is reclaimed in its environs, jhey see the
Deming of the future nestling like a rose in
the heart of a magnificent bouquet of gardens
and orchards.
It is this spirit of pride and confidence as
much as the unsurpassed resources of the re-
' gion, that is sending the Deming country
ahead with such impetus. It is the spirit which
made Los Angeles and Oklahoma City. In
the aeom lies the germ of the great tree, hi
the thistle-seed, the germ of the thistle. In
some villages there is the germ of a great cky,
in others that of a stunted town. The city-
germ early manifests itself, and is manifesting
itself now in Deming in the form of splendid
cooperation and indomitable enterprise. Dem
ing is destined to become a city. Already the
ways arid the air of a city are visible to a
casual observer.
