SPrMidcnt of the Seelety for Practical AslroHomx; Meaner ef the British troBOHIcal Asoclatlen. tSVrltten Expressly for the Kvenlng Sky Map.) HE HEAR a considerable amount of serious discussion at the present time, when air ships. a.roplajjes and all manner of machines lor navigfatir-R thp air are becoming- so jSommon, about the possibility of flying to the moon, or to Mars, or to some one of the other planets of the solar system. The writer would like. In the following space, to explain in a very brief and simple fashion a few of the scientific and actual impossibilities of our aviators ever attaining such a point as to be able to travel beyond the earth's atmosphere. All of our readers know that at a point in the neighborhood of 100 miles or more above sea-level, the air of our world practically ceases, and that be yond this limit It would be utterly Im possible for a man to survive without some other device constructed so as to suppl him with the necessary amount of air to breathe Everyone will grant, therefore, that were it with in human power for an individual to exist beyond the limits of our atmos phere, he would certainly have to be provided with some means of storing and obtaining that most Important In gredient to life, namely air. To begin with, let us Imanglne that we have an airship designed to convey provisions of food, water, and even air itself for ( the traveler therein, capable of pene trating the earth s atmosphere and fly ing out into space. Before going one step further we are immediately con fronted by the fact that no contriv ance, however built for aerial locomo tion, can float upon that very tenuous substance which is known to permeate and pervade every crack and crevice of the pniverse, viz.. the "lumlniferous ether," without encountering some ex tremely serious difficulties. We pre suppose that our readers are informed that exterior to the air which encir cles our globe is what is popularly called "space," although this socalled "space" is by no means a true vacuum as accepted in the theories of modern physical science. Any body which could get beyond the immediate gravltatlve control of onr planet would nltlmatelv come under the prevailing Influence of .the sun. and would, normally, forever after circulate round the latter In an independent orbit not unlike those of the various planets and periodic com ets which occupy the interplanetary regions On account of this well known physical law. our aviator, should It be within his capacity to soar above the bounds of the life sustaining air which enshrouds our globe, would, with his" conveyance, be compelled to move round the sun In a closed ellipse as a small satellite or wandering meteor, and would never be able, to gain Us destination, or ajgaJK, retttrn tp jaotber earth, it is obvious, thereforei. that this predicament is in Itself quite suf ficient to banish forever all our Hopes of escaping from here, In this form at least. However, let us just suppose it to be possible for a person to fly from here to the nearest of all the celestial bod ies the moon, for Instance. The dis tance from the earth to the moon Is approximately 250,000 miles; if a ma chine could be started from here so as to -so to the moon, betas; provided beforehand, of course, wfita the very essential supplies of food, and water, and a chamber containing that vitally Important element, air. lor the trav eler to lHre on during -hte journey (for at a distance as short as eight or ten miles above the earth's surface the at mosphere is so rare that an ordinary individual can scarcely live there for an length of time, and out in space there is no air at all), and could be so devised as to travel at an uniform speed of 50 miles an hour, never stop ping day or night, it would require over tot days to make the trip. Think of It. Jjist picture menially the vast amount of air alone that would have to be taken on such a voyage. In or der, then, to carry merely the sup plies necessary to actual life in the course of this time we should have to manufacture a machine of incredible size, and so arranged that the trav eler could be -supplied with pure, fresh air during every single moment of the journey And lo' what would he find upon reaching the moon? It Is a well known fact In astronomy that the moon Is what we might terjn "a dead world," for as far as modern Investiga tion can Indicate, no atmosphere is present on it So J t is to be strongly doubted whether an ordinary man could survive on our satellite after 1 arriving there, to say nothing of the many other conditions present that would be positively disastrous H hu man habitation Hence, we must con clude that the moon would be a very poor place to visit, if. upon arrlvtag there (which we already know is Im possible as has been pointed out), there would not even be air which a person could breathe The result of this imaginary vojage would be, con sequentl, that the aviator would once more have to mount his contrivance and endeavor to fly "earthwards" (we assume, of course, that he can), re quiring, at the unceasing rate of 50 miles per hour, about 208 days to reach his native world. But if onr traveler were to make a trip to one of the two nearest planets. Mars (the other being -Venus), he would have to start in infancv. for at f the- same "rate (50 miles an "hour) never stopping for anything, he would re- 1 quire nearly 80 years to traverse the distance between us and that point occupied by Mars when nearest to the earth, which is. roughly. 35,000,000 miles away. And after reaching Mars ne wouia not ne at ail assured Dy the latest investigations of astronomy, that the abode for a man from earth. We see. then, from these few Imagin ary instances that have been made use of. that it Is rash for us to even ex pect to visit by means of our airships or any artifice that we now know, the distant orbs of space, that we must be content to remain on mother earth at least for the present, we cannot specu late as to the future and that we must relinquish every thought or dream of' ever departing from thence.
