The first opportunity to test the force of the city water supply was a smart little blaze on Mam street Friday after noon, when the Merchants' cafe" caught fire n the kitchen through an explosion of gas and soot in the fhie, -which forced the flames out the front of the range and caught the lurtain at the rear win dow. Las Cruces; N M, June 29. Judge Frank W. Parker has returned from Santa Fe in his automobile, driving by the way of Durant and Alamogordo, passing through Three Rivers and Tu larosa by following the Rock Island railroad from near Torrance. The judge reports the road in good condi tion generally with the exception of some bad ruts in the vicinity of San Augustine that will be taken care of by the new road improvement now under way. R. P. Porter drove his new auto from El Paso to Las Cruces over the valley route in less than three hours and while ne encounterea some smaii noies and rough places, still he stated that the road was in fair condition and would be fine after the first rain. The local order of Moose has ax ranged for a boxing match at the Ar mory, to be .held on July 3 between Kid Lee. of El Paso, and Spike Fow zer, of Denver. W. G. Esson will referee, and it is expected that a large crowd will be in attendance Mrs. A. Jacoby is visiting for the summer in New York. Mrs. T. R. H. Smith and Mrs. Cleve land have returned after a five weeks' absence in East Texas visiting rela tives at the old home. Mrs. Nestor Armijo. jr. of El Paso, arrived the latter part of the week to attend the funeral of Frank Ascarate. The funeral of E. G. Ascarate, who died very suddenly here, was held from the Cathedral Friday. The services at the church were attended by the large circle of friends. Mr. Ascarate was 35 years of age, a menroer of the Knights of Columbus, and one of the rising young men of the community. Wunch, of Troop A. re ceived fractures of the left forearm and extensive bruises. Trooper W. F. Osborn, troop C, left foot cut and sprained, left palm gashed Several other troopers, names not ob tainable, suffered slight bruises.
