OT LONG ago I said in this col
umn that I thought that the
man who is entitled to receive

the Medal for the Meanest Man was j
the man whose attentions were with-
out intentions. I mean the man who ,
just to amuiM; ujuietbij. m fewi.j
vanity deliberately wins a girl's affec
tion, monopolizes her society, and
keeps her from marrying some other
man. although he never has the slight
est intention on marrying hex himself.
A man, who agrees with my esti
mate Of the meanest man, asks me
whom I consider the meanest girl in
the world.
There are many bad and wicked
women, many women who ruin the
lives or men through their evil in
worse, or who does more harm than .
fluence, but there is not one who is
the grafting, girt i,ne occupies a fine l
place in society, ana consiaers nerseu
a model of virtue, and yet there is
many a bedrabbfed woman of the street
who lias a kinder and nobler heart
than she. and manv a woman thief
serving her term in prison who is
more honest
The girl grafter is young. She is
pretty. She looks soft and tender, but
a marble statue has not less feeling,
nor less smpathy. She is determined
to have things, and she does not care
how she gets them, nor what suffer
ing the getting of them entails on
other people.
Her first victim is her father. You
se him often. A shabby, weary, worn
man. with bent shoulders, who tolls
far beyond his strength to supply his
grafting daughter with finery. He is
being Killed by inches to buv her
silks and satins. But the grafting girl
is only trying her 'prentice hand on
father.
Of course the grafting girl is always
on the lookout for some rich man to
marry, but In the meantime, while she
Is waiting for the moneybags to come
along, she does not disdain small game
and There is no clerk, nor boolfl-eeper
on a small salary, so poor and so needy
that she cannot wheedle something out
of him in the way of a present or a
treat.
She can't talk two minutes with a
man without descanting on how she
loves the theater and lonsrs to see some
particular play, and how she dotes on
sining in a dox until she backs mm.
up into a corner where he has to have

theatrical manager in New York,
except a few Cisgruntled ones.
ui any well versed first aighter, will
tell you that there are mora successful
plays now running in this city than
can be shown oc the records for any
previous season. With the elimination
of the word "successful, the state-
ment is correct But the fact that a
play is having a long run in New York
does not necessarily mean that At is
making money, except in the indirect '
way op the manager's hypothesis that
a long run in New York insures a prof-
ltaDie career on tne roaa. to count tne
Broadways plays that are rolling up
a 'profit at the present' time" one
would not require mere than the fin
gers on one band.
The trouble is we have been over
playing the play this season. There
has been too much of a good thing.
-The Master Mind."
But here is an example of too much
of a had thing. "The Master Mind" is
another crook play. There are only two
characters in the whole show who dare
refer to their past.
It seems that the managers will
never learn that a mere crook, as
such, is not the most Interesting crea
ture in the world. That there have
been geniuses in crime none wftl deny,
but it takes a genius of a playright
which Daniel Carter, the perpetrator
of the present affair, is not to cre
ate a genius of any kind, be he crook
or priest
"The Master Mind" was opened Mon
day night in the very heart of the most
popular crook belt at the Harris thea
tre. But the play did not prove to be

he begins to harry the district attor-
ney with messages -written on white

sent on red paper, meaning that he is
getting closer and closer and the -hour
to strike is approaching.
In the meantime the district attor
ney is introduced into this precious
family, and he promptly falls in love
with the little erookess, as sweet a

Mind had prepared her for her role. He
had sent her to a convent where four
years of careful training had taughtt
her how to do her hair, wear her
clothes, and talk on subjects."

THRB is a lovely mother of four
charming children (the youngest
almost four years of age), who is
feling very despondent and worried
because a fifth child will come to her
in the early spring time.
The husband is m comfortable cir
cumstances; he has no bad habits, he
Is a devoted husband and father and an
admirable citisen.
The four children are models of
brightness, and are admirably brought
up (perhaps because the father has a
German lineage, and therefore does not
believe in allowing children to be wild
savages and to rule a nousenoia wim
a high hand and a loud voice, as is the
purely Americas custom).
The mother is in good health, and she
possesses every charming quality to
bequeath to children.
Somehow the situation does not seem
one to call forth great sympathy. The
four children may be regarded as suf
ficient for one family in this era, but
since so many undesirable people are
producing large families, it behooves
some of our better classes to give the
world more than one or two offspring.
Interesting Experiment.
And now that women are beginning
to understand the great law of prena
tal influence, it should be the most m
teresting of all experiences life has to
offer a woman to experiment along that
line of power and to undertake to
make her child exactly what she de
sires it to be.
With a good and hind husband she
loves and is loved by, with sufficient
means to prevent great financial worry,
with south and good looks and good
lineage on both sides, this special
mother has all God's best gifts on her
