SENATE WILL WORK m SECRET STILL Washington, D. C, May 9. Senator Ashurst's resolution that all meetings of senate standing committees be open to the public will be turned down hv the senate. j Asnurst is always trying to get the light turned on in the senate and acts as if he is perfectly wilting that the public know everything that goes on in the committees, where practically all legislation in the upper house is agreed upon. The senate thinks the ether way. evidently. The senate rules committees has re fused to interfere with the practice of holding secret sessions of committees. Inasmuch as the great bulk of senate business, and that of the house as well, is transacted in committee be hind closed doors, with the public barred, the decision is important. Senator Ashurst introduced a reso lution providing that all meetings of the senate standing committees should be open to the public if it wished to attend. The rules committee consid ered it and will report it back with the statement that meetings of com mittees are now open and hearings can be had by anyone desiring them when they have matter of value to present. The committee, through senator Over man, chairman, will recommend that no change be made in the rules in this matter. Most of the senators are unwilling to abolish the practice of holding com mittee meetings behind, closed doors, for the obvious reason that they do not want the public to know many of the things they say and many of the votes they cast in the privacy of the committee room.
