Work on the bridge over the San Pedro river, near Fairbanks, is well under way. Convict labor is being used. A special train bearing 25 convicts from the stockade at Tempe, where a bridge over the Salt river is being built. and from the penitentiary at Florence, has been sent to Fairbanks. There another stockade has been established. The equipment used at Tempe will be utilized at tairDanns. xnis equip ment consists of a pile driver, con crete mixer, forms, steel bender and rock crusher. Assistant state engineer J. C Ryan is in charge of the work. He is -assisted by timekeeper Stanhope Irwin; Bert Wiener, an engineer; R. E. Klrk land, and Chester Cummins, Arthur Woolf and J. Hyatt, guards. It is possible that the next bridge built by the state's convicts will be over the Gila, near Yuma, but no sat isfactory site has been found. The citi zens of Winkelman are improving the main street, running from the business part to the residence section. Formerly this street was practically unpassable on account of the grade going to the mesa.' This is being cut down about seven feet, and the dirt Is being placed between the main line and the switch, on the north side of the A. E. R. R. This will greatly benefit "the residecce portion of the city. The Arizona Kastern Railway re cently purchased the-N surplus water right from Frank Piper, a ranchman livinsr about three miles east from -i Winkelman. This surplus water is be ing piped from the ranch, to the rail road comoanv's round house and Junc- tton. three miles west of Winkelman. The war department will build at the post three double quarters for of ficers, all containing the latest plumb ing, heating and lighting arrange ments; one troop barracks, one double lavatory, additions to buildings No. 19, 20 and 30. and. the instalation of a sewer extension at the post. Bids for the construction have been called for. TUCSOX FIRM GKTS CONTRACT TO BUILD 15 MILKS OF RAILROAD Tucson, Ariz, May 27. Chadwick & Deyo, a local firm of railroad contract ors, have been awarded the contract for grading a line to be built by the Si Paso & Southwestern from White 'Wa ter, N. M., to the ' Burro mountains, a distance of aaout 1J miles. The cost will be. $150,000. and the work will commence as soon as the outfits can be assembled on the ground. Chad wick Deyo did a considerable part of the grading for the Tucson exten sion of the Southwestern., and also graded the Miami concentrator branch of the Arizona Eastern lines.
