A FIRECRACKER thrown by a
little girl lighted near the stork
and exploded. Smoke got ito his
watery blue eyes, down his long throat
and choked him. He was ruffled.
"The motherhood of El Paso is mili
tant," said the stork to the legislator
opposed to woman suffrage. "I can
see the time coming when the 'women
of Texas will vote, hold office, and in
every other respect be on an equal
footing -with man."
"They will never vote if I can help
it," said the legislator. "Woman's place
is In the home "

stork, "and raising children for her
lord and master. That theory is ex
ploded. If it isn't, one of these days It
is going up like one of the Fourth of
July firecrackers. The man that can't
see this coming is blind. Statistics
show that woman is making every
preparation to assume her new station
in this scheme of life the time when
she will deal with man as his eaual.

This militant movement is going to
get that.
"I think the cause for the change in
woman," continued the stork in his
saddest tone, "is due to the fact that
she has never been fully appreciated.
Man has been more or less willing to
relegate her to the home and her chil
dren, never once thinking that she was
capable of dealing with the problems of
life in many instances she was more
so. Woman can and will take charge
of things for herself one of these days,
and you will see It. It is only a mat
ter of 'framing, and that she is get
ting now, only some men refuse to
see it.
'Rill Be In the Majority.
"When this time comes. said the
stork to the now thinking legislator,
"women will be in the majority, and
what is to become of man? lie will
have to be satisfied with what she does
not want for herself. This thing of the
women voting is new. but the day ap
proaches when she will rally to the
polls and woman's vote will be the
greatest factor in political circles.
Woman being in the majority, she may
want the office herself. Women are
more clannish than men and I am
afraid she will get It.
"There are many theories advanced,
but after all this Is purely a psycho
logical problem. Tou have to figure
on the proposition that woman appre
ciates the fact that numbers count.
"To show you." said the stork, tak
ing a notebook from under his wing,
"what effect this militant movement
throughout the country has had on El
Paso, I want to give you some figures.

Of course it takes time for any move
ment to gain headway, but the start
that has been made her. although
small, shows that th6 militant spirit
has entered feminine circles in 131 Paso.
Statistics Shaw the Trend.
"For the first six months of this
year." the stork went on. "the records
show that there were four more girls
born than boys. Any man that has any
foresight could see the handwriting
on the wall. There was a total of 2S7
boys adn 291 girls born from January
1 to July 1. With the exception of Jan
uary and March, the girls were in the
majority In May the girls and boys
were tied, there being 46 each. There
was a total of 578 American children
born Added to this are 333 Mexican
children born during the same pen id.
The total number of births for the six
months is 911. Remember this, in the
near future if you ever want to hold
office you will first have to make goo-i

Chamber of Commerce fat Endeavoring;
to Get Creamery KataMfehed in
the Artenla Country.
Artesia. N. M-, July 5. This town has
its new waterworks in operation and
water is abundant for all purposes, in
cluding: fire protection. This adddition
consists of a new well and modern
pumping system in the town park. The
Sump is operated by electricity, two 25
orsepower motors having been in
stalled by the Pecos Valley Gas and
Electric company. The well was
drilled and the pumps Installed by Sper
ry & Lukins, deep well drillers of Ar
tesia. The chamber of commerce here con
tinues its inquiries and investigations
looking to the establishment of a
creamery or cheese factory here. The
business seen and farmers are becoming
more and more interested. The cham
ber will hold a meeting next Tuesday
evening, to which an invitation is be
ing extended to all who are interested
in the project. E. C. Shouse, who re
cently moved here from dairying sec
tions of California, is assisting in the
investigations.
