land Stahl was oasted as manager of
the Boston Americans Tuesday by
James McAleer, president of the club.
Though differences amounting to a
serious "misunderstanding" with Mc
Aleer were rumored causes of Stahl's
release, both manager and president in
sisted that the demand of the latter
and other stockholders for a "playin?
manager" was the motive. Catcher
William narrie-an will assume charge
of the team.
Stahl s release was unconditional and
he will give up basebball as a business,
although retaining his Red Sox stock,
devoting his time in the future to his
banking business in Chicago. He has
played few games this season, an in
jured foot keeping him off the field,
though he has managed the team from
the bench. He was grieved 'apparently
at McAleers decision to release him and
declared he had done his best to sus
tain the team's reputation as world's
champions. To all around bad luck, In
cluding his own inability to take part,
in more than a few games. Stahl at
tributed the comparatively poor show
ing of the team this year.
Stahl. one of the most famous of
modern ball players, was induced by
McAleer to rejoin the Boston team and
took up the management at, the be
ginning of the 1912 season, soon after
McAleer assumed the presidency. Under
Stahl's leadership, and aided materially
by his own prowass on the field, the
team captured the highest honors of
the National game.
"Bill" Carrigan has a reputation as
one of the leading baseball strategists
among active players. He is 9 years
old and a native of Lewlstown, Me. He
joined Boston from Holy Cross college
in 1906 and has been with the Red Sox
since, except for part of the season of
1907, when he played with Toronto.

a perfect score in the 150 targets on
the program of the eighth annual east
ern handicap shoot William Heer. of
Guthrie. Okla.. led the field of nearly
300 contestants at the close of the
eents. He broke 99 out of a possible
100 and has an unfinished run of 227
straight breaks to his credit.
Mrs. Topperwein, of San Antonio,
Tex., finished with 145 targets broken
out of her quota. She had a run of 113
straight.

liams, of Baltimore, was given the de
cision over Charles Ledoux, of Paris.
France, in the 16th round of a battle at
Vernon arena last night. The French
boxer asserted he had been fouled and
remained on one knee. The referee,
howeer. held up the American's hand
The blows that sent the Frenchman
down were a left to the chin, followed
by a right swing to -the body. Previ
ously Ledoux had complained of being
fouled. The battle was characterised
by fierce milling, but neither bantam
weight displayed usual boxing form.
Williams led in probably eight
rounds, but toward the last Ledoux. ex
pecting the limit of 20 rounds, picked
up on aggressiveness. Toe Frenchman
was punished .about the face, while he
put in most of Ms efforts on Wil
liams's body.
Ledoux was said to be In bad shape
today from blows claimed by ' his
friends to have been foul. Two phy
sicians were called to attend him and
found he had sustained an Injury in
the groin which will keep him In bed
several days.
HERRICK BOYS ARE
RETURNING- HOME

will stage the 10-round bout between
Abe Gonzales, of Albuquerque, and Jack
Herrick. the Herrick boys Jack and
Joe, will lfave for their home in Ke
wanee, I1L. Thursday morning. An of
fer of a $200 guarantee was received
by Joe Wednesday, but aa they are
holding out for a guarantee of $300, or
a privilege of 30 percent of the gate
receipts. It is probable that an answer
will be received shortly from A. G.
Mosely, matchmaker of the proposed
fight.
Jack has been touring the country
for two years, and Joe has been away
from home for a ear and a half. The
boys will rest up for three weeks in
Kewanee and will then leave for the
Pacific coast They will return to El
Paso with the racing season. Both box
ers are disgusted with the receipts at
Juarez. Jack only received $170 for
putting Carroll to sleep Sunday, as the
fight drew less than an $800 house.

After deliberating several days. Bill
Leidy, manager of the Beaumont, Tex
league club, has accepted the terms o
Chaa. Gurts. second baseman of the El
Paso Mavericks, and has ordered the
local player to report at once. Gurtx
received a dispatch from Leidy Satur
day asking his terms to become a per
manent fixture at second base for the
Oil team, for the remainder of the
season. He immediately communicated
with Leidy and the telegram Wednes
day morning was the result.
Gurts has been hitting around the
300 mark in the Copper league, and has
led the Mavericks In the batting aver
age column this season. He played with
the army team in the City league last
year, and at the end of the 1912 season
was secured by the Marshall, Tex., in
dependent team, which disbanded sev
eral months ago. He was then signed
by the Mavericks, where he has been
for the past two months. Gurts iaiA

ers in the southwest, and his work
here attracted the attention of Leidy.

shown by the correspondence now be
ing received by R. H. Rinehart. chair
man of the racing committee.
Today he received a letter from Chas.
F. Keene. of Trenton. N. J., asking for
conditions of the race and if a private
owner outside the city of El Paso
could enter. Mr. Rinehart answered
that he could enter and that the club
would be glad to have his entry.
