McCrummen will enter tain the West branch of uie women of Trinity Methodist church with a birth day offering at her home. 416 West Boulevard, on Thursday afternoon at 3:36 cclock. The Social club of St- Clement's Episcopal church will entertain to night with a party at Kendrick hall. The study class of the Women's Mis sionary society of Trinity Methodist church met on Tuesday afternoon at 3.30 oclock at the church. Mrs. George Oliver presided. The subject for studv was "Campaigning for the King." "Evangelism of the 'world, the supreme business of the church," was discussed after the opening song and prayer by Mrs. I. J. Avers. The various mission boards were discussed by &rs. G. L. Jones and Mrs. H. I. Graham. Miss Norwood Wynn gave a beautiful scrip ture lesson and talk. She is in charge of the Mexican boys' school. Mrs. C. W. Webdell talked on the organisation of women's work and the qualifications of the board members. Mrs. D. M. Smith closed the meeting with prayer. The central division of the First Pres byterian church gave a most delightful musical with silver offering on Tues day afternoon at the home of Mrs. W. Xu Gaines, 1406 Montana street. The house was attractively decorated in chrysanthemums and a beautiful mu sical program given by some of the best talent of the city. Mrs. Frank J. Thomas sang "There Little Girl, Don't Cry," and "Life." and was accompanied by Miss Anne Lee Gaines. Mrs. W. D. Howe rendered two vocal solos, "A Spray of Roses" and "Reverie." Miss Marjorie Livesley rendered a violin solo and was accompanied by Miss Virginia Bean: Mrs. C. O. Rucker read a number entitled "Is It You 7' and was accompanied on the piano by Miss. Anne Lee Gaines. Miss Virginia Sem ple gave a piano solo and Mrs. A. H. Goldstein rendered two vocal solos, "A Barque at Midnight" and "Nothintr But Love." and 'was accompanied by Miss Semple Miss Mathis rendered a piano solo There 'were aTout 50 persons present to enjoy tne atternoon. Robert T. Neill, assistant United States district attorney, arrived Tues day morning from San Antonio. Mrs. Neill remained to visit relatives. A. N. Brown, general traffic man ager for the K. P. & S. W. railroad, returned to El Paso Tuesday morning from his Chicago office, where he has oeen on Dusiness. F. B. Gallagher has returned form New York, where he spent several weeks. Mr. and Mrs. Sigmund N. Schwabe have returned from their honeymoon spent in Los Angeles, Calif. They will be "at home" to their mends at 911 Wyoming street after November 15. Lodges and Clubs The El Paso council or the Knights cf Columbus will hold an instalation of officers at the Knights of Columbus hall on Thursday night. Mrs. William J. Jennings entertained on Tuesday afternoon at her home, 1201 Orient street, in honor of her mother, Mrs. E. R. Allison's, 77th birthday anniversary. The guests pres ent were all residents or Golden Hill, and the entertainment of the arternoon was both unique and unusual. Art work, modern and antique in ham mered brass, pottery and decorated china and all sorts of hand embroid ery and lace work practically all the work of the guests and hostess were displayed. The Uiaplay was unusual In duality I and varlety.Mrs. Percy ir. Knight was given me iirst prize ana Dlue ribbon for her embroidery and laces. The prize was three bon bon baskets of crochet, which were Mrs. Jennings's work. Mrs. A. G. Nelson was given the second prize, a crocheted change purse; Mrs. M. H. MaccaUum won the prize for the best display of antiques. Her prize was also a enange purse. Mrs. P. K. Brice won he prize, a rib bon work bag for the best single piece of work. The guests presented Mrs. Allison, the honoree, with six finely embroidered hankerchiefs. Light refreshments "were served. Assisting Mrs. Jennings in entertaining were: Mrs. William Jennings, Mrs. P. Women's Organizations This afternoon the Woman's club is holding its "Club House Day" program in the assembly hall of Hotel Paso del Norte. -Sf -SE- The Sunshine Helpers met with Miss Rose Piatt on Tuesday afternoon. Plans for the year were discussed and arrangements begun for the dance which will be given by the Helpers during the winter. Sewing was also accomplished Miss Isabel Springer was taken into membership. The next meeting will be with Miss Katherine Cox at the Lucerne apartments. The Helpers meet every two weeks. Although it was thought that the waters of the Rio Tularosa have been appropriated to the limit, surplus and all, applica tions continue to be made for the di version of its waters. R. W. C Nov. 11. Senator James Hamilton Lewis, of Illinois, to whom was ascribed authorship of the letter offering Henry M. Pindell the American ambassadorship to Russia for one year, conferred with secretary Bryan relative to the matter. At the conclusion of the conference the senator said he had absolutely nothing more to say in regard to the case. When informed that Mr. Ptndell had intimated the alleged Lewis letter was a forgery, the senator said: "Mr. Pindell has spoken. S- Cundiff, of the local office of the reclamation serv ice, left for Las Cruces Tuesday morn ing on official business. They are ex pected to return Wednesday morning. Dances The SI Paso Social club -will enter tain with the second dance of the sea son on Friday night at the Toltec club. The first half of the dance will be cotillion and will be led by cap tain Harry N. Cootes, of the 13th cav alry. There will be only four dances during the season. A new year's dance will also be a feature, and the last one will be given some time after the holi days. The dance Friday night will be an elaborate affair. Officers stationed at Fort Bliss will give a ball and reception Wednesdav night In honor of Col. Frank West, commander of the Second cavalry, which is preparing to leave here for Galveston. Many civilians have been invited to attend the affair, which promises to be a brilliant one. Gen. Hugh L. Scott will probably offer a farewell toast to the departing colonel.
