EI 12 Tuesday, December 9, 1913 Troopers Prepare For Winter In Camp Electric Lights and Cement Floors In Troop L's Tents American Cavalrymen at the Smelter Have Model of All Border Patrol Camps; Captain "W. H. Clopton, Commanding Officer, a Champion Shot; Soldiers Have Their Own Cliickens. WHEN It is a 1xint of making themselves perfectly comfort able on an unlimited supplr ot sand, held down by scraggly Patches af cacti and greese wood. Xour Uncle Sams soldier n-en are the fellows to do t Perhaps the model camp of all the troops on the border is that of troop "L". 13th cavalry, adjoining the cement plant. Not only nave these troopers all the camp fixtures provided by Lncle Sam for their comfort, but their tents are electric lighted and cement floored, and there is running water in the camp. These lights, floors, and water, being more than the members of other border patrol troops enjoy, members of troop "IT are swaggering in consequence. Troop "LT patrols the shores of the alternately muddy or dusty Kio Grande from the smelter plant to Anapra. There is also an outpost, extended to the powder magazine across the Iew Mexican border. The camp site has some strategic Importance, as it guards the E. P. & g W. bridge, the Southern Pacific bridge and the Santa Fe tracks. Officers' Quartern Snng. "Officers Row" tents have a wooden irame work with wooden floors and three feet high walls, covered with the khaki tent roofs. They have bulltin desks, not as ornate as the modern bungalow, but perhaps more service able, and the tents are picturesquely hung with polo mallets, sabres, bridles, opurs, and other military paraphernalia The "Officers Bow" tents are double affairs, with the sleeping quarters In the back. Every tent throughout the camp is electric lighted and has a stove to keep the atmosphere comfort able when the weather man slips El Paso some northern weather by mis take, . , Han Champion Shot. In the commanding officer, Capt. w. H. Clopton, this bay horse troop has the champion rifle shot of the army. Capt. Clopton was the captain of the cavalry team that won the national rifle match this year at Camp Perry. Lieut. "W. "W. West, first lieutenant of the troop, is an expert pistol shpt and a member of the championship polo team of the 13th cavalry. Ieut. E. H. Coyles has just joined the troop, Eoming from Fort Leavenworth. The tents for the men are big roomy .rraiT-o nncnmmndatinET three or four . troopers. The cement floors keeping J out the sand, the tents are mucn more comfortable than the average camp, and the troopers have them decorated with pennants and pictures. In the troop office, quartermaster sergeant Will E. Hosell and first ser- . ti T:in h.r, lioli- nnnTteirn geant juuu bucb . .... - - - i and manage the business and clerical work of the troop, xne xeni is evuiff with typewriters and desks. Barber Shop and Graphapuone. Adding to the complete independence of the troop to be comfortable wherever it may be. is the troop barber shop, the only equipment missing in this feature is the trieolored striped The mess tent, which Js also the amusement room of the troop, is 66 Teet long and has a wooden framework and side walls. Troop "L." has a very good graphaphone for Its entertain ment when the troopers are off duty. A model concrete foundation for the field range In the kitchen is another feature of which the troop is rather proud. When this concrete apparatus becomes thoroughly heated, it retains the heat for a very long time and Is a ?reat aid to the troop chefs. Adjoin ing the kitchen is the chefs quarters, which rival the average college boy's den for the pennants, pictures and souvenir hung walls. Adjoining the mess hall, at the other end, is the troop exchange, where the men can buy everything they need from a paper of pins to theater tickets. To lay out the stables and model the rest of the camp, about four feet of. earth had to be scraped away in level ing the ground. The stables are lo cated on a natural shelf of the hill un der the Southern Pacific bridge. Ac commodations for 74 horses, 27 on. a side, are here, with the mangers ex tending through the center. Each horse has his own particular place and feed box at this long supper table, where they are blanketed and tied every night. The side of the hill and the fences of the cement plant, with an ad ditional fence, built by the troop, forms a triangular corral, vhere the officers' private horses, the troop mounts and the very Important troop mules can roam about during the day. Readv for Instant use, the saddles and bridles are on racks at one end of the stable. Through the kindness of S. C McCurdy of the cement plant, a water pipe has been run to the stables, with a big galvanized iron watering tank for the horses. At the entrance to the corral is the stable sergeant's and stable guard's quarters, and the horseshoeing shop. Troopers Have Tbelr Own Chickens. Eggs may rise to any height Jn the price line, but that does not bother troop L. There are about 30 troop chickens who patriotically supply about 20 fresh eggs a day for the troop. To insure the same liberal sup plv for the future, there is a flock of miniature "rookies" to the hen troop that will be on the egg supply .duty In about eight months. Has Six Pet Cats. Soldiers are noted for their fond ness for pets. Troop L is no excep tion, but in addition to being fond of dogs, the troop has six pet cats, that the soldiers wouldn't part with for any price. Every time the troop breaks camp and moves the cats are carefully packed in a grain sack and carried along with the rest of the troop equip ment. Athletics have always been popular In the troop and during the military tournament at the last Os-Aple cele bration L troop won the largest num ber of events of any troop in the con test While at Fort Sill, Okla., troop I. held the regimental baseball cham pionship and they have always led in every kind of athletics. Stars at "Wigwagging. Wigwagging is another star, stunt of "L's" troopers. With the exception of the 11 recruits who joined the troop just before they left Noria, every man in the troop can talk as easily with a signal flag as gossips can talk at a pink tea. The 13th cavalry Is one of the new er regiments of cavalry, having been organized at Fort Meade in 1901. Troop 7j with the regiment has served two tours in the Philippine islands the first time at camp Stotsenberg, and on their return a few years later, at camp Mc Grath Batabgas. In the tates it has been stationed at Fort Sill. Okla.; at Fort Leavenworth, and at Fort Riley. Kans., before being sent here for bor der duty. Troop "L" is getting to be a veteran at camp duty, having been tinder can IVIUU KJTUerS ceipt. Everything in Sporting Goods, Arms and Ammunition. Write for prices. Shelton-Payne Arms Co. vas since 1912. All the lumber frame work for the tents and stables is "toted" around with the troopers in their various movements up and down the border. . MAKING CHECK OF SMELTER IMPORTS A check of all imports made- at this nort bv the American Smelting and Refining company is being made by special representatives of the treas ury department. These special agents have been here for the past two weeks and are going over the smelter ac counts for the past years to ascertain the amount of ores brought by the smelter from Mexico and the amount of lead and zinc contained in these ores. As the smelter is a bonded one, the lead which -was contained in the Mex ican ores has been sent out of the United States and no duty paid on it as It was handled at the smelter in bond. It is of this lead ore that the treasury department is making a check and it is understood that simi lar checks are being made at the Chi cago headquarters of the company and at other places in the United States where lead ore Is handled in bond. fays Every Thin Man or Woman Can Prove It for Themselves by Sending for a Eree 50c Package.
