BY DAMOJf NEW YORH.Iec. 9. Williams Joh, the well known boxlns referee, had a. -very narrow escape from serious injury at Madison Square Gar den, coming' off unharmed only through superior footwork, but he lost only his respect for prize fighters and es teems himself quite fortunate at that Mr. Joh "wsas caught in the same ring with Jess Willard and Carl Mar ns, two of the largest and loosest White Hopes known to science, who were spilled all over the Garden arena, for a space of 30 minutes, during which time no1 one could do a thing about it. It was decidedly a thrilling expe rience for Mr. Joh, because there wera frequently moments when it appeared certain that either Morris or Willard would fall on Mr. Joh and squash him. Then, too, there were times when a wild swing might have struck Mr. Joh in the Jaw, for all Mr. Joh knew, or for all either Morris or JVillard knew, either, for that matter. They did not fe that it was their business to exercise control over their swings after they had started them. They just wished their swings well and let 'em go, and Mr. Joh had to do the dodging. Referee Show Garaeness. It must be said for the referee that he is a game fellow. He is almost as game as the Boxing commission whii sanctioned the meeting f Messrs. Morris and Willard, althouxh it is understood that the commissioners all feel duly apologetic about the natter now. However, they did not have to risk tfcrir lives as did Mr. Joh. We understand this from James Johnston, manager of the Boer, who was haunting the Garden, claiming the title for his charge. Mr. Johnston' says that Willard won, and as Rodel beat Willard in Milwaukee, that makes Rodel champion. Willard Wins Fight. It may be that Willard won, as Mr. Johnston says. He was the least of two pronounced evils, anyway, al though the audience seemed to feel that there ought to be some law cov ering both of the parties implicated in the proceedings. Nothing said above must be taken as detracting from the efforts of Mr. Joh, however. The referee took his life in his hands and implored the gpnts to fight. Frequently he bur rowed between them like a mole and undermined their most fervent clinches, but nothing much came of it. They say Morris has improved -J,ftftO-per cent. It inspired the gallery to jeers and it in spired large numbers of persons to leave the premises before their time was up. William Joh could not leave. Prince -- Howard, arrived in El Paso Tuesday morning, after being delayfed on the road from Kansas City, for 48 hours. Thorpe will go to work at once for his scheduled bout with Tommy O'Rourke. Tommy O'Rourke Is a wonderful ln fighter. This was the verdict of as sembled boxing critics Monday after noon when they witnessed the north ern lightweight go through his Initial boxing workout, preparatory to the Thorpe contest, Dec 14 at Juarez. Eddie Duffey, an asslmllator of note, donned the gloves for two rounds with O'Rourke, at the end of which the visi tor's right eye was bleeding, the result of a collision with Duffeys head. In fighting is O'Rourke's strongest as set. In the clinches, the northerner pounded Duffeys midriff section with straight right and lefts, varying with left and right uppercuts to the Jaw and face. Thorpe has the cleverness and punch to hold O'Rourke at distance. but the aggressive Memphis boxer shows as well at distance as in the clinches. A left hook to the jaw and a left uppercut at distance are both qualities of O'Rourke. His punches appear to have the necessary steam be hind them.
