Every alley was an ambush and every house a little fortress. Germain Use Incendiary Bombs. The French finally succeeded in slip ping around the enemy's right along the Steinbach brook and then com menced a fierce combat for the posses sion of Steinbach itself. The church and the cemetery were twice taken and twice lost Since hand to Hand fight ing was now- going on night and day, and from door to door, the Germans; unable longer to use their artillery, resorted to incendiary bombs and set fire to a number of barns and houses occupied by the French. A changing wind, however, obliged the Germans themselves to quit the first line of trenches, being unable to control the fire, and the flames finally reached the ammunition reserves. The explosion which occurred when the ammunition caught fire made the little town tremble as though from an eaithquake. Defence Finally Breaks Down. Still the Germans held on till the morning of January 4, when the last courageous resistance of the defenders was worn out by the persistent and impetubus charges of the chasseurs and the whole town was occupied. This point, the gateway to Cernay (Scnnhelm) which commands important routes to tho south, to the north and to the east. Is no longer tenable for the Germans. a. THE DAY IN CONGRESS. Washington, D. See 'BROWN OF HARVARD' COMES TO CRAWFORD "Brown of Harvard," Henry Wood ruffs great success, is being given by the Lyric Players at the Crawford this week. Bert Gagnon plays the title role of Tom Brown, a college man as he is, rather than as he is painted. Gagnon's interpretation is a bit differ ent from that of Woodruff in the orig inal play, but he puts everything into the part that belongs there and makes it a real character. The supporting cast Is well selected and a number -of additions were made to the players for ttaja production. Miss Pollock phtys the ptt ot Bvelyn Ken yon, who Is In love with Tom Brown, and is seen te advantage, especially in the tea party in Tom's room and in tho boat race scene, which is the big one of the Dlav. Everette Walker plays "Tubby" and gets away with aU tne laughs in the comedy part, in spite of the fact that he is small where "Tubby" is supposed to be big, bulging with fun and fat Lyman White has a difficult part and does itwell, aB Gerald Thorne, who is working ills way through school and is stroke oar on the 'varsity eight. He overplays It a bit in the big scenes, as he has not yet learned Bert Gag non's suppressed manner which makes his work so fine. There are complications and counter-complications In the college play, all of which w6rk out right in the end. Gladys Bursh introduces some excel lent ragtime violin solos. Miss Pollock sings ragtime' cleverly and 3ert Gag non and the men of the east sing col lege glees much as college men sin-j them. The scenery is good and the of fering is one of the best the Lyr.c Players have given in El Paso. N. M. v. TODArS AMUSEMENTS. CHAPLIN AT GRECIAN. Sid Chaplin (Chas.
