"MADAME X" AT THE CRAWFORD.
Sometime cold type cannot be fired
with sufficient enthusiasm to tell in
adequate terms the credit that is due
for the work well done, and this is one
of those instances, referring to the
emotional acting of Bdith Pollock in
the title role of "Madame X," the
drama that truthfully lays bare a les
son depressing If one wishes, but none
the less strongly true.
Miss Pollock has played roles that
have called for every bit of force she
possesses, but it is doubtful -If her
large number of followers have seen
her in so trying a character as the
one essayed in "Madame X." Marking
as it does the first stock production
here of the well written drama, interest
naturally centers in it. and in the
same way attention must necessarily
be directed to Miss Pollock, because
she Is the real player iB the produc
tion, written as it is around her part.
In the cast supporting Miss Pollock
the player were at their best, all nf
j them having a desire to make tho well-

non makes the part of the lawyer for
the woman stand out by the way he
acts the part. .Sharing with him in
the honors are LeRoy Lewis and Lyman
White, the former as the husband, and
the latter his true friend. Both of
these players sustain their excellent
reputation Here. Claude Gaganon, Jo
seph Echazebal. and George Hanna did
well In their roles.
Gladys Bush, Adelaide Irving and
Minnie Louise Ferguson filled the
other roles very satisfactorily.
"Madame X" is mounted with special
care as to scenery, costumes, and- fleet
and should set the attendance recordi

wrote him a letter of protest, contend
ing that because he was a good Demo
crat, Mr. Tumulty should have stopped
with him.
He went to Jersey City with his wife
for a social visit and the newspapers
said he went to settle an appointment
fight.
At the earnest request of a Demo
cratic member of congress be wrote t.
letter endorsing a man for office and
later discovered the man was connected
with the "lemon trust."
