German Prisoners Say They
Eeceive Good Food and
Have No Complaint.
Paris France, April 2. German
prisoners in France are well treated
and well cared for. so 'far as couM be
learned by an Associated Press cor
respondent who made a round -of sev
eral of the camps with official per
mission. The camps are In good con
dition generally. The prisoners seem
uniformly convinced that Germany will
win this war ultimately.
There is little sickness, plenty or
food and of good qnalitj. and the
housing arrangements are satisfac
tory. ' 1
There are ltM German prisoners in
the Issoudan barracks from all arms
of the service, of all ages from 19 to
43, and from all sections of the battle
front. All are rosy and gay and sat
isfied with the food that is given
them. This amounts daily to a pound

and a half of bread, two pounds and
six ounces of vegetables, a quarter
ox a pound of meat and 12 grams of
coffee, the latter mixed at the re
quest of the prisoners with barley,
because pure coffee is too strong for
them.
These rations are the same as those
given the French soldiers, except as
to the quantity of meat, which is re
duced from a half pound to a quarter
of a pound, in retaliation for the
measures which are said to be applied
to French prisoners In Germany.
"We are well cared for. We do
only six hours work: a day, are well
fed and are treated -with consideration
by the French officers and soldiers."
F. Rondholz, of Constance, a 2 year
old private of the 142d regiment of
infantry, said in a signed statement
to the Associated Press, lie is a pris
oner at Issoudan.
Believe Xothlnc In Paper.
The 60s prisoners at Tours are
housed less comfortably than those at
Issoudan, but as well as are the French
soldiers. Recent arrivals" in this camp
are said to be more depressed than
those who preceded them, but nothing
can convince them that the Germans
are not bound to win and nono of
them seem to believe anything that
I appears in the prisoners' newspaper.

"We know all about that We have
the same thing on the other side. It
is the kommandatur who does all
that." they say.
Privates Are Docile.
The privates naturally are docile
and the officers are compelled to be
so after having given trouble at
Hountaban. The officers seem de
pressed and less haughty since the
New Year, their hopes of being able
to celebrate Christmas at home being
disappointed.
Hani Times At Home.
The news received by the prisoners
from home is said to have changed in
tone in the last two months.
The letters, it is declared, talk of
hard times, but still insist on a vic
tory for Germany in the end. Offi
cers at the camp say that packages
containing sausages, preserves, to
bacco, condensed soup, cakes, soap and
many other articles came on an aver
age of one for each man each week
for the first six months of the war,
but that now they are arriving much
less frequently. The receipts of money
are also less frequent. Where pre
viously they distributed Stop francs
each week, the officers declared they
now distribute only 100.
Interned Civilians Are Different.
The contrast between the soldier
prisoners and the interned German
civilians In the concentration camp at
Chateauroux is striking. Most of the
civlians show plainly the influence of
their long contact with the -. ench
people. Their faces cloud when the '
question, -"Would you like to be sent
back to Germany?' is put to them.
Numerous races comprise the colony
of 890 prisoners, who are housed with,
modern comforts in a new bulldfni-
!i of the asylum in the department of
the Inure. Germans are most numer
ous among the mass, which in ludes
I Austrians, Poles, Alsatians and Czechs.

Families are provided with light apart
ments where they can enjoy a sem
blance of home life. Here 11 children

installed. There have been only two
deaths, both from tuberculosis.

Berlin, Germany, April 2. Despite
the fact that the Russians have been
sending many reinforcements -Into the
Carpathian mountains of Austria-Hungary,
they have been unable to secure
any material advantage in the ter
rific battles which are in progress, es
pecially between the Lupkow and i
Uzsok passes. '
The Austrians, the dispatches say,
have gained an advantage In llolnar
vagas. where the fighting was dogged
and in snow knee deep The artillery
fighting in Dukla oass has slackened.
AH the Russian attempts to break the j
Austrian lines have failed, the Rus
sians suffering terrific losses.
The dispatches assert that it is im
possible as yet to foretell the ultimate
result as the Russians f ontinue to send
forward reinforcements.
Numerous prisoners are being sent
to the rear daily, many with froien
limbs.
North of Czernowitx the dispatcres
say the Austrians are gaining ground
steadily. They are now fighting on
Russian territory. The number of
prisoners taken there increases dail,
it is asserted.
BERLIN DENIES GERMANS
LAUGHED AT DROWNIN. MEN
London En?., April 2 Denial that
the German submarine crew laughed as
tHe passengers of the British steamer
Fataba drowned after the ship had
been torpedoed, is contained in a wire
less dispatch from Berlin. The dis
patch also denies the passengers were
given no time to save themselves.
The dispatUi adds:
"German submarines have ' always
shown humanity when sinking steam
ers, but in this instance the submarine
was forced-to withdraw quickly on ac
count of the approach of other vessels.
It was therefore unable to assist in the
work of rescue, as the malicious and
hostile attitude of English merchant
men toward our "U boats is. well known
and forces ns to be prudent."
TURKEY WOULD LIKE TO
MAKE PEACE, IS REPORT
London. Eng., April 2. Newspapers
in Geneva, Switzerland, declare that J
Djavid Bey, the Turkish minister of
finance, has arrived in Switzerland to
find out -the terms -upon which the
allies are willing' to conclude peace with
Turkey. Djavld Bey had been to Ber
lin, where, it is said, his attempt to se
cure money from the German empire
was a failure.

The camp delegation, which is com
posed of representatives of each na
tionality, preserves order and carries
out the regulations. The prefect and
the commissary of police form a court
of last resort, but are seldom ap
pealed to.

the chamber of deputies voted Thurs
day to adopt a bill providing for re
