Gerrit Smith, inventor of the duplex and quadruple systems of telegraphy, which respectively permit the sending of two and four messages simultane ously over the same wire, died here Tuesday at the age of 77 years. Mr. Smith perfected his invention while in the employ of the Western Union Tele graph company. He was retired on a pension 19 years ago. after more than 50 years of service with that company.
