There was. a very heavy onslaught. i during which asphyxiating gas made the Germans masters, in the besrin- ! ninfr, of this position, but our allies subsequently delivered counter aciacics, and captured a portion of the trenches previously lost. French Itrcotrr LoNt Ground. "In the forest of Ailly the counter attack delivered by us toward the end of the day made slight progress and we recaptured a portion of the posi tion where the Germans had succeeded in gaining a footing in the morning. During the night the Germans deliv ered a counter attack arinst our posi tion at Mamelon, to the east of SiUa kawern. the summit of which they re occupied." Teuton Devel-ip StrateKT. It is understood that strong pressure upon the retreating Russians has been brought to bear by the forces of Gen vor. Mackcnzen and field marshal baron von Hoetzendorf, which are ad vancing from the west. The operation of the Austro-German force which is now threatening the Russian line between the Dunajec and Blala rivers. Is regarded as a first class performance, from a German mili tary standpoint, particulrly as it is the receipt of a frontal attack against strongly fortified positions. The Austrians crossed the Dunajec near its confluence with the Vistula, although the Russians were strongly protected behind a dike on the eastern bank. The Austrians. behind a dike on the west shore, advanced pontoons by night, cutting through the dike and depositing the pontoons by night among blgh reeds aloig the shore. They refilled and resodded the cut each night. In this ways a sufficient num ber of pontoons was concealed in three nights for effecting a crossing of the river. 'When these preparations had been completed a. terrific bom bardment enabled the Austrians to bridge the stream with comparatively little loss. Gorlice Attack Unparalleled. The Austro-German attack near Gor lice Is described as an unparalleled per formance. The Russians belleveC their position to be absolutely Impreg nable. The artillery of the allies, from 42 centimeters down, so completely overwhelmed the Russians, however, that the Austro-German Infantry was able to take the opposing positions at the first rush. The operations were veiled by a heavy bombardment of the Russian po sitions along the N'ida river last week, the Germans and Austrians meanwhile bringing up a powerful force, including an enormous amount of artillery, to the Dunajec river for the great push eastward .toward Lemberg. The Rus sians still hold one strong position on a range of hills more than 10M feet high, near Tuchow, but this position is now threatened from both the north and south. Artillery is already pre paring the ground for an attempt of infantry to dislodge the Russians. Hope to Take Ypres. The situation at Tprea. Belgium, where the grand duke of Wurttemburg is commanding, is also considered high ly promising for the Germans. It Is believed here that the British and FTench will hardly be able to hold the town of Tpres for another week. The Germans are said to "lave gained nearly three miles during the last few days. their opponents withdrawing steadily before the German Infantrv and ma chine gun attacks. Advices from the Belgian front say this retreat in places is a disorderly one, and that numerous dead or wounded soldiers are being left on the ground. GEN. Referring to the war, the former president said: "For a time we are enjoying a feverish activity in many branches of industry. We must take care that we are not over joyful and mislead. When peace comes feoine of this activity will be suddenly cut off with the sharpness of a cable dispatch. In our business affairs we must prepare for that change. "We have been criticised for the sale of arms and ammunition permitted un der the international rules. The ruls has always been that neutrals cuiid furnish arms and foodstuffs.
