decided strength, the result of general buy
ing on the part of commission houeea. Signs
of renewed export demand continued to fa
or the bulls and pit offerings were light.
There appeared to be considerable lessening
of tension in regard to the possible conse
quences of the sinking of the Lusitania.
After opening at the same as last night to
lc higher, the market scored a material
advance all around.
The close was strong at & to Cc above j
Corn took the same course as wheat.
Speculators ho sold early were soon
forced to cover. The opening, which varied
from unchanged figures, to He higher, was
followed by a moderate general upturn.

Provisions went upgrade from the start.

McKelway, southern secretary of the
national child labor committee, told
the industrial relations commission to
day that cotton mills of the south were
the chief opponents of child labor
reform legislation." He declare, cer
tain cotton mills throughout the south
were maintained as "show mills" with
schftols, churches, hospital and welfare
organizations.
"Behind these mills," he said, "all the
other mills hide. It is very difficult
j to secure remedy measures. What
diiiuums iu leuaausm prevails in tnese
mill towns. The companies own the
houses, streets, the schools and the
churches even in some cases the
graveyards."

The Bailey school children had the
highest average of spellers of any
school of the city In a recent writ
ten spelling test, held at the vari
ous schools. The principals of the
schools exchanged buildings and gave
out the words prepared by superin
tendent R. J. Tighe and also corrected

ing to telegraphic advices to Curtiss-Man-ning

Confidence, restored by the speech of
president Wilson In Philadelphia, was re
flected in the prices of stocks Tuesday, rail
road stocks as well as coppers showing the

cultural college Monday night entered
a revival meeting being conducted by

S. Andrews, presiding in the trial of
Wm. Barnes's suit for libel against
Theodore Koosevelt. remarked in re
fusing today to strike from the record.
testimony concerning Mr. Barnes's con
nection with direct primaries legisla
tion, race track legislation, the fran
chise tax and his opposition to gov
ernor Hughes, that such evidence did
not show any corruption or impropriety
on the part of Mr. Barnes and was al
lowed to remain in the record to show
the plaintiffs position in the Repub
lican party.
In a discussion with TVm. Ivins, chief
counsel for Mr. Barnes, justice An
drews remarked that he considered the
article upon which tire" suit was based
libel per se, because it charged a cor
rupt alliance between Mr. Barnes and
Mr. Murphy.

Villa consular officials in El Paso from
governor Jose Maytorena, of Sonora.
