25 CASS WILL RACE
AT INDIANAPOLIS
Indianapolis. InL, May 35 When the
elimination trials ended Monday. 15
cars were declared eligible for the fifth
nnuKl Son mile race, which is to be
run next Saturday at the Indianapolis
motor speedway. This is tne smallest
field that has ever Qualified for the
event and it -is believed that two or
three more cars will be unable to start
so the list of competitors may be re
duced still more. Forty cars entered
the race and 33 would have been per-
mitted to start had they Qualified.
An average speed of 88 miles an
hour was required in order to qualify
for the contest A number of drivers
failed to gej this speed out of 'their
machines and many of the entrants
arrived too late to get their cars into
shape for the contest. Among these
were Pullen. Ruckstell and Nikrent
drivers of American made machines,
who withdrew today.
Most of the stars of the racing world
who entered will start the contest
Barman, Old field. De Palms, Cooper.
Wilcox, Rests, and Anderson are among
those who have qualified for the con
test Darius Rests, made a lap Monday at
the rate of 98 miles an hour. Cox and
LeCain also made better than the re
quired average.

El Paso Athletics for a game this com
Ing weekend.
The Altura Juniors have a tale of
woe. They were to play tbe Alta
Vista Methodist Sundav school boys
team on Saturday morning but the
Alta Vistas failed to show up. Their
second disappointment of the day was
on Saturdsv afternoon, when they
were billed to play the Feldman
Seniors, but they declare the Feldmans
also defaulted.
The Tsleta Juniors have reorganised,
secured a couple of new pitchers and
PSTEIT ISSUED .
Doctor Celebrates and Ex
cites His Neighbors; Has
to Have Two Autos.
Monday Dr. . D. Strong received his
state patent to his 1300 acre home on
Mount Franklin and Monday night he
celebrated by displaying red fire and
shooting bombs. Some hysterical peo
ple thought his place upon the moun
tainside was burning and. without tak
ing the trouble to Investigate, sent the
police and firemen an alarm. Mean
time, the doctor and his family, una
ware of the excitement they had
created, and. not connected with the
cit.- by telephone, continued their cele
bration. Police captain Lee Hall and
Eugene Harris, responding to the
alarms telephoned In by the people
who could see the celebration, went out
as far as they could gin Mr. Harris's
automobile, then cltmbeC the mountain
until they found that there was nothing
in progress needing outside interfer
ence or help.
Dr. Strong discovered this unclaimed
land and took it up as a homestead
three years ago. He built a home on
the side of the mountain, about half
way to the top. after first bu'lding a
road up tbe side of the mountain and
hauling the materials for the house at
great axDense. For three years he and
his family have lived on the mountain,
side. The homestead tract extends
straight through Mount Franklin and
across back of Kern addition, 300 of
the 1300 acres lying on the west side
of the mountain.
Now that title to the place has been
received from the state, it is no longer
necessary for the doctor to continue to
reside upon the mountain, nut tney
have not as yet made arrangements to
move down. They have a comfortable
five room house up there and are grow
ing trees and shrubbery, although this
is somewhat expensive, as all the water
they use has to be carried up on bur
ros at a cost of 50 cents a barrel.
The distance up the privately built
road from Highland Park to the doc
tor's home is four-tenths of a mile and
the rise In that distance is about 4J0
feet. Some of the grade is 33 percent
The altitude of the place is about lOOu j
feet above the postoffice corner, mak
ing it a total of about 4T00 feet. l)r 1
Strong has to take all his own supplies
to his mountain home. When he first
moved up. until he got an automobile
that would climb the hilL he carried
the supplies on a burro, last summer j

road, he carried his supplies up on his
back for three weeks.
To make his trips to the city from
his home and return. Dr. Strong ins
to have two automobiles. He has one
geared to run a mile and a half an
hour on "low" and six miles on "high.
which he uses in ascending; and de
scending the mountain. This Is kept-

car from the garage, leaves the car
that he uses downtown, and continues

Mexican Uses 30-30 When
He Sees Man In His Store;
Nickel Car Is Held Tip.
Nicholas Cadena owns a little storrt
at 110 Tays street He sleeps in n
rear room of the store. Early Tuesd
morning he heard the glass in the
frcnt window of the store broken ana
saw the outline of a man moving
about in the store. He took his "i0-3
rifle, loadd it and fired at the sup
posed burglar, hitting him squarely in
the head.
The intruder, who was a Mexica ?.
was taken to the emergency hospital
and from there to the county hosptt il
where he is not expected to l!e. -No
letters or other means of identification
were found in the man's clothes. No
complaint has yet been filed agalrst
CadVna, but one will probably be filrl
as soon aa the unknown man's conrii
tion is definitely known. A quanta
of goods was mussed from the store.

C. P. Boler, who drives a nickel car,
was assaulted at 1S;S0 -Tuesday morn
ing by two passengers In his car who
he said were soldiers who had boardel

Boler was struck over the head with
some blunt weapon and it require'
a number of stitches to sew U.-5
wounds in his head.
He told the police that one of ths
men told him to stop at the corner
of Pledras and Bliss streets as he
wanted to get out there. Alighting from
tbe car the man walked to the driver a
side as if to pay for the trip when
Boler says he struck him and dragged
him from his seat The car drier
shouted for help and the soldiers ran
when another auto appeared. -o
money was taken although he had
his day's earnings concealed under
the driver's seat
