BY1 T. S. ADlfEWS. ' MILWAUKEE. WIS- Nov. 9 Who will be the first lightweight to meet Freddy Welsh in a clash for the championship of the world? The above question has been put by Earrv Pollolc. manager of Welsh, in a letter addressed to the sporting edi tors of the country Mr. Pollok wants the sporting: authorities to decide which ill. . t. t.f.a ... Auwr nj;" ciuiiis Air: uwi cuuticu iv matches with the champion He offers to arrange four battle for the title. after which elsh will announce his retnement, prowding of course that he should not be defeated in the mean time Minaper Pollok wants the men se lf ted and will then appear be f re the club making the best bid for the contest that is. clubs where cham pionship bouts can be held of at least 20 rounds. The offer is a very fair one Indeed and if followed out the fans will hae nothing but praise for the clever Briton, now champion Of course there is liable to be a hitch when it comes to matching up with Willie Ritchie, for manager Pollpk stated previously that he would not permit Welsh to meet Ritchie unless tne latter gave him the same purse he was compelled to gie the American champion when they fought in London a purse of $2 000 for his end. Since that time Pollok has modified his of fer so X am informed and is willing to ai epi $15 000 for Welsh's end. Ritchie Should Have FIrt Chance. ' ,c the four men to e named. Willie Rtnhie should have first chance at the title as it was from him that Welsh wou the championship and be should be shown that much courtes of a return bout. Th'S all depends, however, on Ritchie being able to make the weight. etc It is a well known fact that Ritchie has repeatedlv refused to make 135 at 3 oclock for Charlie White, who has been after him. and whom Ritchie signed to meet befo-e a Milwaukee club in Octo ber or November Willie will have to m ike 135 at 3 for Welsh or he will get no chance at the title and he should then be advanced to the welterweight v ision. Ritchie tells me. however, that he will post a Me forfeit to make 135 at 3 for Welsh in a championship ir.atih. but not for any other I pre-' sume if he should meet Welsh and beat him then he would want to Jump the weight to suit himself. Then White or Dundee. The next in line would be Charlie "White or Johnny Dundee These two boys are evenlv matched and really should fight it out for the honor in a 2u round battle There are four bojs who should fight it out for third trial Joe Mandot. Johnny Griffith. Milburn Sarlor and Joe Welling They are all of about the same size and weight and wouJd make a good quartet for an elimination tournament. Saylor has reallv earned a right to a chance, ow- 1 tn the iinKntiRfartnnr ending of his battle with Welsh at Winnipeg, when it was ciaimea bayior snouia nave oeen declared the winner instead of loser on an alleged font. Ted Lewis, the I.i slish boy, who has Just eliminated Jatk Brltton In two matches at Boston. Is surely entitled to a try at the title, proi .ding again he can make the weight. He has failed to make it in a couj le of Instances of late, but at that he mav be able to do so If he can. then he is a dangerous contender. And r Rirhie Mitchell, the Milwaukee oungster. continues to travel at the speed he has shown of late he will be a. contender in six months time. Trott Leaves Itlng. Jess Wlllard's opponent in his fight there next March will be Frank Moran, Jim Coffeey, or Fred Fulton. The list Is singularly unimpressive. Fulton- Is unknown hereabouts, and may be much better than his record In dicates, while Moran has as yet done nothing to astonish the fistic world. However, it would be the height of aosuraity to consider Jim Coffey ahead of Moran for a title contest in view of the Plttsburgers easy victory over the Roscommon man a short time ago. Of the three named. Moran certainly has the strongest claim on the cham pion's attention, if actual accomplish ments In the ring are to be taken Into consideration, no matter what you may think of Frank's ability. But accom plishments are not always figured when promoters get their heads together Qn the basis of accomplishment, Jess Wil lard had no more right to a fight with Johnson than several other men In the ring, but Willard got the match. If the box-fight boosters were real sportsmen, and not real business men, and if past performances entered into the making of championship matches. Gunboat Smith would be the logical contender against Willard, but you will note that Gunboat's name was not mentioned in the list of possibilities sent out from New Orleans. And Gun boat not only gave Willard a thump ing, but he also holds a twenty-round decision over Moran. whose name was on the list. This Fred Fallon. There is a tip out that Fred Fulton Is to be the man finally selected as Jess's opponent, although no one has any definite Information on the subject- Fulton Is a huge fellow who was unearthed In Minnesota, and who has some mythical claim to having knocked Willard down daring an exhibition bout when Willard was ont with a circus. Apparently the Willard syndicate re gards this claim of a knockdown by an unknown as a greater stain upon the Willard escutcheon than the 10-rotmd decision over Jess held by Gunboat Smith, or the l!-round victory over the champ attributed to Tom McMahon Fulton has been doing most of his fighting out through the middle west He beat Arthur Pelkey not Ions ago. but then everbody beats Pelkey. True. Willard failed to stop Pelkey In ten rounds on one occasion, but that fact adds nothing to Fulton's record. Al Falser "is credited with knocking Ful ton kicking in four rounds in May. 1S14. at Hudson, Wis., and Palzer was on the chutes even then. So Fulton has done nothing to date that gives him any particular standing In the more select fistic circles. His record is even less Impressive than the record of Jess Willard before Jess met Johnson, and that was regarded as about the last utterance in pugilistic unlmpresslveness. Properly press-apented In the mod ern fashion of constructing champions by earnest typewriting. Fulton might be made a more commanding figure between now and the day of the battle if he got the match: but at the present moment he figures only as a set-up for Jess. On his record, he could not draw enough outsiders to New Orleans to see him fight Willard to fill the front row of boxes. He Slay Be Great. We are not saying that Fulton Is a poor fighter. He may be a marvel for all we know to the contrary, but if he would lick a few birds like Moran. Jack Dillon. Charley Welnert. Gunboat Smith. Jim Coffey, or even Jim Flynn. Jim Savage, or .Tom Cowler, we would be more Impressed with his chances against Willard. As we have said before, and said at some length, we do not regard 'Willard as invincible. There Is nothing in his past record to suggest invincibility: and with another year added to his life, and a year of comparative lnac- zv . . f -fuA-r "Z DfOJA jAV 1HA.T UJA.S 5vJR. In naming Moran. the promoters at least named a legitimate contender. In naming Fulton and Coffey, they prob ably perpetrated a merry Jest. There are some who are inclined to the be lief that Jack Dillon can whip Moran. but it is hard to believe that such a comparatively little fellow as the In diana manmauler would have a chonce against Willard. It would probably be another case of Ketchel against John son. Dillon says he is anxious to fight Moran. Such a match would probably give a better line on Moran's ability than the Coffey fight. However, as long as Moran thinks he Is worth a J10.00 guarantee. It Is not likely he will fight Dillon, or anybody else. It Is a cinch he will not get $10,Oe for fighting Willard. Making a Contender. There is no particular mystery about the elimination from championship consideration of Gunboat Smith. He wouldn't draw at the turnstiles or at least, he wouldn't draw as well as some -of the others. He Is the same age as Willard and Moran. and has licked 'em both, besides licking men they couldn't lick, but he Is lacking in all those little attributes that go to make up a card In a championship en counter. And you couldn't ever give 'em to the Gunner, either You couldn' sur round him with the romance and glaiaor that could easily be invested in a Moran. or a Coffee or even a Fulton. Under the modern method of construct ing a championship possibility, the pr rooters could take a fellow like Ful ton, and although you don't know for sure right now whether he Is white or black, in two months they would hive you believing that he is a devastating tcrnado in human form ', As for Moran. they could make you forget in three days that series of de feats by Gunboat Smith. Tony Ross. Jack Geyer, Jim Savage and Jack John son, could erase from your memory that picture you acquired at Madison Square Garden of a slow, lumbering, stiff armed fellow, and show you a typographical photo of a young, lithe, fast, clever, clean-limbed, clear-eyed athlete that would have you down hook, line and sinker on the Pittsburger by the time he entered the ring with Jess. Great Is the promoter and greater Is the promoter's press agent' We haven't a doubt that they could even make the faculty of the University of Pittsburg believe that Frank really did matriculate, or graduate, or study, or do something there, no matter how strongly they are convinced to the con trary at this time uecKs Amen cAaer BY 'DECK. It made good reading bnt they rather stretched the facts. pRED FULTON is to be the oppo nent for Jess Willard at New Orleans next March, according to Chi cago reports which axe considered fairly reliable. Didn't believe that Jones, Cnrley & Company would con sider patting Willard against Moran or any man who would stand a real chance. They don't want their meal ticket punched yet VTITH Graham on' the mound, which now seems probable, the soldiers will give the Professionals a real ball game at Rio Grande park Thursday afternoon. Graham and Wilson appear to be the only .soldier heavers who really h e class enough to go against the professional play ers yet but Ross, Adams and Paris all show flashes of good form. They will pass muster when they learn to keep cool heads in emergencies. Q0MMERCIAL cars will take up at at least one mile in the big motor parade in connection with "El Paso Automobile Week," if H. M. Gillespie is a good guesser. 'Gillie" is looking after the truck depart ment of the parade and asserts that his section will be a big surprise to everybody. QUESS we're getting to be some automobile burg with a truck factory considering the prospects of locating here and a tire company promoter on the ground now. ""TUCSON held a successful auto mobile race over a mighty poor track on Saturday and now the speed merchants are tuning up for a big 150-mile race at Phoenix. Pity El Paso can't have a big race here some time this winter. Laying out a mile or a two-mile track somewhere in the valley near the city should be a good investment. JOHN J. M'CLOSKEY is doing some grand boosting for EI Paso in California. One San Francisco paper devoted two columns to "Honest John" and his arrival there and quotes him as saying that "the best sports in the entire world live in El Paso and it's the finest city of its size that I have ever been in." "Mack" didn't get rich ont of base ball here this year but he is never troubled with sour grapes. pRED WINS0R wants to put "Kid" Arrousey, his featherweight star who now also claims the lightweight title in California, against "Kid" Payo or "Kid" Lammersen at Silver City and is also trying to get a bout in New Orleans with "Kid" Herman. ONE surprising thing about the tour of the All-Amencan and All-National baseball teams is that the winning team hardly ever hts a margin of more than one run and they seem to take turns in winning. DATTLING NELSON will realize one of these days- that his time in the ring is over. He took another walloping Friday night at the hands of Jack Reagon and Jack isn't rated as championship timber by any man ner of means. Football will be played at Hio Grande park again next Saturday, when the heavy team or the Silver City Nor mal school comes here to play a re turn game with the high school Tigers. A rattling good game should be the result, as the score at Silver City was only 10 to 7 In favor of the Normal and the high altitude militated against the high school boys, who found it very difficult to cut loose with their speedy offensive plays on this account. Coach Evans says that, although the team is not tn the best of shape, the fact that the boys will play on their own grounds and under normal condi tions should make the contest one of spectacular excitement and Intense in terest. tilas Vs. San Jacinto. A new element will be injected Into the local football circle by the first appearance upon the field this year of the teams from Vilas aad San Jacinto schools, who will play the preliminary game beginning at 1:15 oclock. These teams have been practicing hard and should show the results of their care ful coaching. Vilas is being coached by Lieut. J J. Ord of the army, and San Jacinto by coach Williams of the San Jacinto schools. A large crowd should turn out to see these games, particularly as every one Is sure of a comfortable seat in the spacious stands at Bio Grands park.
