He was the father or Walter D Howe, of El Paso, who left here Sunday afternoon to be at the bed side of his father, but failed to arrive there in time to see him before his death. Gen. Howe- was also a brother of Mrs. F. E. Hunter, of EI Paso. In the death of Gen. Howe's native home. Notified Custer's Family. ' When Custer's famous battle of the Little Big Horn was fought and his en tire command wiped out, it waa Geir. Howe, then commanding in the west, who had to tell Mrs. Custer and the wives of the afficers of the fate of their husbands. Gen. Howe especially distinguished himself in the Philippines and was mentioned a number of times in the war department records for valor in action. . Born In Indiana. Gen. Howe was born in Blbomlngton. IniL, December 21. 1S4. and was th-J son or James Montgomery and Mars Graham Howe. He graduatedfrom the United States Military academy at West Point in 18S7. On September 31. 18S9. he was married to Miss Elisabeth Dunn, of Bloomington. Ind. She sur vives him, as do three sons. Walter D. Howe Is a practicing lawyer here: Alfred Is a lieutenant in the United States navy, and George is professor in a college at Colorado Springs. Colo. In Artillery. Upon graduation Gen. Howe became a second lieutenant in the Fourth ar tillery, and served as first lieutenant, captain, major and lieutenant colonel of artillery until 1 8. when he -was appointed colonel of the 41st infantry volunteers, and went in command of that regiment to the Philippine Islands, where he was commander of the prov inces of Albv and Sorrogon. Before going to the Philiipine islands he had participated in the Modoc war In 1872, anjd the Powder river expedition under Gen. Crook in 187 After his re turn from the Philippine islands in May. 194 he became a colonel of ar tillery, and on January 11, Isle, became a brigadier general in the regular army, retiring on account of age, De cember 31. 110.
