COLLEGE OPENS FRIDAY, SEPT. 21 PHOENIX, ARIZ, Sept 14. The discovery of J464.000. cached in an oat of the way spot In the hills of Graham county, this stale, is related by K. K. 'Whitman, of E'-ic-monvllle, who Is now on a visit to relatives at Chandler in this county. The discovery was made by Joe Wl-. ficy, a cowboy, who Is said to be mak ing efforts to discover the former owners. According- to the story told by Whitman, Walsev was riding in search of stray cattle alone tbe Box X trail northwest of Solomon vllle, when he had occasion to deflect from the beaten path. When he came upon a dead tree in the centei of lour huge boulders and noticed a shovel handle tucking out of !ne iree trunk, he began an investiga tion. Finds Treasure Box. Uigemg at the roots of the tree, he came upon an iron treasure box, which upon being opened disclosed his valuable find. The treasure con sists principally of old Spanish cold com and vessels of solid gold. Metal experts have pronounced the actual alue of the gold to be about $400,000, a'though the intrinsic value of the gold vessels, which are said to be skilfully worked, make tbe find worth considerably more than this. Gold Is Held at Safford. The find has been taken to Saf ford, county seat of Graham county, and placed in security. Old residents of that section of Arizona declare that Walsey has discovered the hid ing place of the padres who were driven from Old Mexico about 75 years ago, when this part of the United StateB was a part of that country. At a meeting of the board of di rectors of the College of the City of BI Paso, Thursday night, the report of chancelor IL M. Colvin was heard and accepted and fnll arrangements were made for the starting of the college at 9 oclock a. m, Friday, Sep tember 38. The executive committee reported the arrangement whereby teachers in the city and county schools could re ceive training in the teachers' col lege without Interfering with their daily work as teachers. The arrange ment consists of Saturday and cor respondence courses. The Saturday recitation courses will be applied in psychology and community sociology. under Dr. Howard C Taylor, and pub lic school music under Mrs. H. C ciunn. of the teachers' colleere faculty. The correspondence courses win take up history of education, school man agement and methods. The Saturday recitation classes are to be held in the courthouse and occasional quizzes in toe correeponaence courses wiu oe held in the examination room of tbe county superintendent In the courthouse. Employment for Students. Chancelor Colvin reported tbe offer made to him by the National City bank, of New York, to employ stu dents of the school of commerce in the New York offices every summer vacation at pay and college credits- a no to employ permanently those wno finish the school of commerce courses and are properly certified. The chancelor reported excellent cooperation on the part of The El Paso Herald and Times, stating that the two pacers had up to date de voted 45 columns of publicity to the college and its various branches. Orndorff is prepar ing to move the county prisoners Saturday morning into the new $85,000 Jail, on the roof of the new courthouse. There are ITS prisoners on hand and the transfer may require all Saturday and Sunday. In order to insure absolute clean liness In the new jail from the start, the sheriff is planning to give each prisoner a double bath before moving. Disinfection will also ve made, where needed. At the new Jail the prisoners will give up their old clothing, which will be disinfected and placed under lock until each prisoner is discharged. New Uniforms Cost 1S.eC The new jail uniform will be the only clothing allowed in the new prison. It will consist of an olive drab blouse and trousers to match. The new uniforms were bought by the sheriff of a local firm and cost $2.06 each. The old jail has been purchased by the city and will be transferred as soon as the present Inmates leave. It will be remodeled so as to provide room for the corporation court and an assembly room for witnesses, visitors and the like. ROBERTS ATTENDED BY MANY Special music by a quartet featured the religious services for Martin D.
