FRIDAY, SEPT. 21
PHOENIX, ARIZ, Sept 14. The
discovery of J464.000. cached in
an oat of the way spot In the
hills of Graham county, this stale,
is related by K. K. 'Whitman, of E'-ic-monvllle,
who Is now on a visit to
relatives at Chandler in this county.
The discovery was made by Joe Wl-.
ficy, a cowboy, who Is said to be mak
ing efforts to discover the former
owners.
According- to the story told by
Whitman, Walsev was riding in
search of stray cattle alone tbe Box
X trail northwest of Solomon vllle,
when he had occasion to deflect from
the beaten path. When he came
upon a dead tree in the centei of
lour huge boulders and noticed a
shovel handle tucking out of !ne
iree trunk, he began an investiga
tion. Finds Treasure Box.
Uigemg at the roots of the tree,
he came upon an iron treasure box,
which upon being opened disclosed
his valuable find. The treasure con
sists principally of old Spanish cold
com and vessels of solid gold. Metal
experts have pronounced the actual
alue of the gold to be about $400,000,
a'though the intrinsic value of the
gold vessels, which are said to be
skilfully worked, make tbe find
worth considerably more than this.
Gold Is Held at Safford.
The find has been taken to Saf
ford, county seat of Graham county,
and placed in security. Old residents
of that section of Arizona declare
that Walsey has discovered the hid
ing place of the padres who were
driven from Old Mexico about 75
years ago, when this part of the
United StateB was a part of that
country.
