A new act just passed by the Japa nese diet, known aa the military mo tor vehicle subsidy law, provided sub sidles for manufacturers and owners of motor vehicles suitable for mili tary use, capable of carrying' one ton. The vehicles may be requisitioned at any time for reasonable compensa tion. The law provides that manu facturers and owners must be Japa nese subjects, and vehicles must be of Japanese origin. Fending greater production of Japanese vehicles, how ever, owners of cars of foreign manu facture are allowed within the sub sidy scheme. The Introduction of American mo tor vehicles, particularly motor trucks, into Japan, has not progressed as rapidly as in some other countries, owing to poor road conditions and cheap coolie labor. A few American automobile and tire concerns, how. ever, have become well established there. With the Essex It is possible to make an average In excess of 29 miles to the gallon of gasoline and 10.000 miles for a set of tires Is a common occurrence, according to President Perry. The Essex factory has been running test cars for over a year and the automobile engineers are enthusiastic over the new car.
