Breefcenrldge, Texas, Sept. 19. In the far southwest corner of Stephens county, only a few miles east of Moran. Shackelford connty. the Cosden Oil company's C. R. Compton well is standing full of oil at a total depth or 3SS0 feet. The oil Is coming from a black lime formation en countered at a depth of 30 feet. The wen is .hnt down tor orders. The operators are of the opinion that the well will become a large producer. Oil men have not yet decided whether this well extends the Stephens county field a distance of 16 miles or whether it opens up an entirely new deep pooL There is some production In the vicinity ef Moran. but this is coming from a shallow depth. The Cosden well is the first deep test In which oil has oeen un onrtheri in this vicinity. Not since the days of the discovery of the Duke-Knowles and Desdemonla pools has so important a discovery been made. The Branch No. 1 is situated only a half mile north and west of the old pooL but does not ex tend the field, as good production has been encountered at a recent date in its vicinity. Westhelmer. et al's Bratton No. 1, in the far southeastern section of Stephens county forms an extension of two miles or more to the north and west from wells classed as in the Ranger pool, although it is on Stenhens countv side. In the same neighborhood, the Magnolia Petroleum companv is drilling at a depth or 2790 feet in its No. 1 Gardenhire. A show ing of oil was encountered on top of the lime in this test. Southeast of Breckenrldge. and southwest of Caddo, the Gulf Produc tion company's Herrington No. I at Cotton Plant is making 160 barrels at a depth 01 0io reet North of Cotton Plant, the Maznolla Petroleum company is getting a daflv production of 450 barrels from its Frost No. 1. The Texas company's Brooks No. 4 Is on top of the big pay at a depth of 3180 feet and is making 750 barrels daily. In the Caddo pool the Phillips Petroleum company is making 1100 barrels, natural in its Long No. L The Lone Star Gas company's Heatiey No. ! is making 120 barrels 01 011 daily. Company Refuses To Aid Geological Survey Representative Parrish of the Mtfc Texas congressional district is urg ing that the United States geological survey make investigations in Mon tague. Baylor. Throckmorton, Den ton, cooke and wise counties where extensive drilling for oil is going on, and also in Wilbarger. Young. Archer, Jack, Clay and Wichita counties which are already producing. It appears that the geological sur vey has no immediate intention of making any surveys In Burkburnett ana nearby oil fields but it has men at work In the Ranger field. Topo graphical mapping has been done in both Wichita and Wilbarger counties. George Otis Smith, director of the Geological survey, is quoted as say Ing: "These maps were designed as a oase tor a very aeiaiiea geological map of the area covered which would have particular reference to the oil and gas resources. However, when one of the largest companies operat ing in the region refused to cooperate by supplying well lor data the -work was indefinitely postponed. There is no law which can be invoked to corn pel the furnishing of such data." EASTERN OIL COMPANY'S WELL AT TULSA A WINNER Tulsa. Okla- SeDt. 19. The Liberty Refining company has completed Its well No. 8, on the Ludas land, the -northwest quarter of sec tion i-U-11. west of Okmulgee, in Okmulgee connty. The well Is mak ing 150 barrels per day. The Ridge Oil company's well In Beggs district Is flowing at the rate of 1SO0 barrels. This well is in the same section as the Eastern Oil com pany's welt Klmbley, et al., have a 25 barrel well on the Yargee land, Okmulgee county. According to reports from Carlsbad, Eddy county, N. M, Charles Watson begun last week building the derrick for the first of two wells which he had agreed to drill near Loving In that county. The rig and drilling materials had been moved to the lat ter olace some time previous. This derrick Is going upon the Cunning ham ranch Three or four months ago Mr. Wat- eon gave out in El Paso that ne had taken over the Brown welt about three and a half miles northwest of Dayton In Eddy county, together with a very considerable acerage around tt The Brown well Is an artesian well which has a reputed oil produc tion of 26 to 18 barrels of oil with the water. So far as can be learned here Mr. Watson has not done any thing with this well nor with the leases he procured at the same time, Hueco-Ranger Oil Company Has A Gusher Hercules Oil Company Has Well Producing 800 Barrels Per Day. On the Tobe Morton tract west of the Poteet the States Oil corporation has a bit lost In Its No. 1 bole at a depth of 3(90 feet ENTHUSIASTIC OVER THE OIL PROSPECTS IN NEW MEXICO Rov Thomas, who Is looklnc after the Interests of the Sinclair Gulf com pany In New Mexico, with headquar ters in Tucumcari. is In Fort Worth for a few days, says the Star-Telegram of that city. He was formerly chief scout for the Sinclair company in the north central Texas fields. Thomas has become very enthusias tic over the prospects for an oil field In New Mexico since he went to that state. He reports that there are be tween 25 and 30 tests In the eastern part of the state and that a number of other drilling contracts are pend ing. Among the other com panies with vast acreage are the Gypsy, Sinclair and the Empire. The Empire is said to possess very valu able leases. WELL IS DOWN 400 FEET IN BREWSTER COUNTY, TEX. So far there are nine locations in Brewster county, according to latest reports, with Berger and Hudson drilling on the Ilargus ranch and now down about 400 feet The Allen Oil company has made locations and con tracted for three wells south of Mara thon. Berger and Hudson also have a location on the Skinner ranch. The Marathon Oil company plans a well on the A S. Gage ranch and the Pre. sldio Oil company on the James P. Wilson ranch. New York Men Will Operate In El Paso County Leases Purchased East of Hueco Tanks by George A. Lamb & Co. According to an Oklahoma City, Okla, dispatch W. E. Hudson, an at torney ot Tulsa, and his associates of the same place have sold their lease of several tracts of land east of Hueco tanks, in El Paso county, ana ex tending over into Hudspeth county, aggregating over 79,000 acres, to George A. Lamb & Co.. of New York. lr. Hudson teaseo. these lands last winter and has since paid the money reouired if drilling for oil was not commenced according to contract. Tne Oklahoma report says that Lamb & Co, had geologists examine the hold ings some time ago and that de velopment ooeratlons will be started at an early date. SINCLAIR COMPANY OWNS 250 SQUARE MILES IN TEXAS The Sinclair Consolidated Oil com pany, through its subsidiary, the Sin clair Gulf Oil company, owns about :0 square miles of oil holdings in Mexico. Texas, the La Mesa Oil and Gas company has let a con tract for the drilling of a 4000 foot test well in the eastern part of that county. The comoany has 11.000 acres in Dawson and Borden counties. Ranger. Tex, Sept. 1. Mueh ex citement prevails In this vicinity, where oil men are waiting wtn inter est completion of the Ardisone Brader Oil company's test on the Kincaid tract. The well Is now making a dally flow of about .400 barrels from the top ot the black lime. It is believed. nowever, mat wnen me wen i com pleted the production will increase. Up to this time the production on the Kincald tract has been small. The Kincald tract Is lust west oi ine 800 acre holdings of senator Brels- ford, on which a 70 barrel well is flnwlnsr. Thn senator has recently sold the royalty in an undivided 100 acres out of this tract for the sum and consldcutlon of J 75.004. Ills well, which Is SvO feet east ot the Kincald tract is not Included in the recent transfer. After the news ot the Kin caid well bad circulated, the senator rejected a number of offers for other royalties at the same price. The Ocean Oil company's well on the BrooKs heirs property is iiow lng 1300 barrels at a total depth of 3414 feet. Wells Flows 1S0O Barrels. On this same property. In the south west corner, four and a half miles north of Eastland, the Southwestern Oil Development company's well has encountered a producing sand at a depth of 3SS5 feet. The well is now flowing 1S00 barrels per day and is showing much gas at a depth ot three feet in the pay sand. Owing to the gas and oil pressure it is Impossible to keep the drilling tools on the bottom of the hole and for that reason drill ing has been temporarily abandoned. At a depth of 4S feet In the black lime at a total depth of 330 feet, t'lls well flowed 500 barrels by heads for several days, before the big pay was encountered. Barclay et al's well on the J. W. Turner tract, offsetting the Pleasant Grove cemetery lot la making 30 barrels of oil on top of the big pay. Balentine's No. 2 on the I'leasant Grove church lot has a fine showing of oil on top of a lime formation en countered at 3320 feet. It Is believed that the big pay In this test will not be encountered until 'he drill has gone at least 1100 feet deeper. The Empire Oil and Fuel company's test on the Peeples tract is expecting to reach the big pay at 330$ feet. The drill is rapidly approaching this depth. A fine showing ot oil was encountered on top of the black lime. Plow Pays at SOTS Feet. The Humble Oil and Refining com pany's E S. Davis No. B-I, in the Desdemona district Is making 1100 barrels from the blade lime pay at :S7S feet. In this same district the Texas company's No. 3 G. X. Grice is mak ing 250 barrels of oil after being shot with 30 quarts ot nitroglycerin at from 1S59 to 26(0 feet. The No. t G. N. Grice, was shot from 2C93 to 20S feet, but nothing has yet been learned ot the condition of the welL The Magnolia Petroleum company's P. O. Harris is making 75 barrels of oil from a 15 foot .and encountered at a depth of 175S feet Its Rock well Is making 50 narrels from a foot sand encountered at 3350 feet. The Cosdeh Oil company has added two more good gas wells to Its al ready long list of gassers. These are the C. C Holcomb. which encountered the gas sand at 15S3 feet and after drilling tour feet shut down until the casing could be set; the J. A. Beard well which reached the sand at 1510. Casing is being set at 1533 feet.
