The Dawn and Seattle Weekly Times $1.40 PRICE 5 CENTS. j NEWSPAPER RATES AD VANCING. | The arbitrary action of the j paper manufacturers in taking ad- 11 vantage of the present enormous j demand to raise the price of news paper, lias at once affected a great number of the cheaper papers throughoul the country. Jn nearly all of the larger cities the papers heretofore selling on the streets at one and two cents have been forced to raise their price to four and rive cents, and the rates for subscrip tions and advertising space have been correspondingly increased. It is, of course, upon the larger consumer of paper that the burden first falls. Dailies in small towns and the country weeklies may not yet be compelled to advance their rates as they are now proportion ately much higher than those of city prints. Their margin of profit however, is immediately cut down, and should the price ot paper be maintained for any length of time the subscriber and advertiser must be called upon to shave tbe expense or the paper will be forced out of existence. All the leading newspapers of Montana have already been affect ed, and have met, or are trying to meet, the emergency with the an nouncement of new and higher rates to subscribers and advertis ers. Even the country weeklies of that state are taking action along the same lines. The movement is timely and it is hardly likely that the patrons of tbe paper will allow any of them to decline in view of the inflexible condition with which they contend. —Spokane Chronicle.
