Preference is sometimes shown for a particular location and a request is made for further infor mation, which is always given. More often, however, positive ad vice is sought, the letter closing with the direct question, Where would you advise me to locate? Pew men who are not in tbe busi ness of selling land would care to assume the responsibility of ad via ing a man off-hand to locate in any ! particular place, no matter bow great his faith might be in the j country as a whole. This is es pecially true when the inquirer fails to state whether be wishes to engage in the mercantile, stock, I dairy, fruit, grain or diversified farming business. Consequently tbe usual reply is to locate some where in the Pacific Northwest —it doesn't matter much in what part. With a little money, nerve and | fair health, success is absolutely certain. It the health is poor it will probably show immediate im provement. The safest and best! plan is to read all the literature! obtainable on the various sections, of the Pacific Northwest. Don't! be afraid to answer advertisements of chamber of commerce and real estate men. Primarily their mo-, tives may be selfish, but they are honest as a rule and are all working for the upbuilding of the country in which they have unbounded faith—a faith which is justified. Then, if possible, make a tour of inspection before leaving the old home for good. This is not abso lutely essenlial, because it is al most a certainty that the man who is willing to make a personal in spection will remain. —Northwest Homeseeker and Investor. IT does not hurt a good man to be watched and a bad one needs it. What good measures the senate don't kill the house will, and we will get little short of freak legis lation unless matters in Olympia take a change pretty soon. PUBLIC officers are sometimes not above public suspicion in these days of corruption and the people have a just cause for being some what skeptical as to their acts. The Davenport Tribune puts it thus: "It looks like local option was going to be merely a local application." THE bill for an eight hour law introduced by J. C. Hubbell leaving the house Must prior to taking a vote on the local option bill and tried to deal fairly with the subject, and at the I same time use language not sub ject to two interpretations. Since that time we have had personal as ! surance from Mr. Hubbell and : others, that he did not side Step, as not only his friends but also his j enemies we are unable to explain ! why he should have absented him i self at such an important time, but ! the following letter will certainly ■ satisfy the people here that his co laborers in the house rely on him as a supporter of local option: OLYMPIA, Wash., fan. 29, 1909. Hon. J. C. Hubbell, City, Dear Sir —I notice by some of the papers that you are being criti cised for being absent when the j Tote on Monday. January 25th, sent the local option bill to the Judiciary commttee. I know you have been with us right along and a few minutes earlier voted with us on the motion to shut off debate. I think you arc perfectly justified in going to the ! train to meet Mrs. Hubbell, and [as your vote would not have changed tbe result this should not be a subject for criticism by any one. As the introducer of the bill. I am perfectly satisfied with your position. Yours truly, (Signed) W. C. McMaster. Th the work!—TacomaTribune, THE HANSON BILL WAS SIDETRACKED OL.YMPIA, .Jan. 27.—8y a vote of ill to 1(5 the senate this nioriiiside tracked the Hanson ami-race track I gambling bill, seeding it on the trail lof tbe Falconer-McMaster local option into the pigeon bole of the judi ciary committee, Senator w. G Graves of Spokane, chairman of that committee, announced in debate that that committee would hold up all bills for new criminal laws until it had considered the new critic : inal code now being prepared by tbe code commission of prosecuting attor neys. The new code is now m at ing com pletion and will be presented to the committee within a few days. It will take some lime to go over it with ex. Isting laws. Many existing criminal provisions, notably those prohibiting the desceration of the Sabbath by open theaters and other public amusements have been omitted from it and will be repealed by its adoption. Friends of the Hanson bill declare that its reference to the judiciary com mittee is part of a new plan to make paasage of the new code, with its less stringent laws on oilier moral ques tions, the price which will be exacted for the passage of the Hanson measure, Champions of the Hanson bill made an effort to have it referred to the p iblic morals oominltee, which would have reported it back Immediately, Senator Graves, opposing this plan, de clared that if this criminal bill went to the public morals committee he would return all other criminal bill in his committee to the senate with tbe rec ommendation that they aiso go to that committee. Those voting to send the bill to the judiciary committee were: Anderson, Bassett, Davis.
