The Stove House of Kittitas County A Few Plain Words Tbe I-'aicouer-MeMaster local option bill which the anti-saloon forces have introduced into the legislature at U lytn pia, provides that whenever one-fifth or more of the qualified voters of any county, township, city, precinct or pari of precinct outside of an incorporated town or city shall so petition, the ques tion whether the territory so covered by petition shall have or abolish sa loons shall be submitted to tbe voters, and the majority vote shall be binding. It also provides that the people of any political division who may vote to abut out aaloona may, by the same method, after a reasonable trial, vote to restore them. Nor does it prohibit the delivery of alcoholic beverages to to residents in "dry" territory where the order for such merchandise has been placed in a "wet" territory. In brief, the Falconer.McMaster bill will strike unprejudiced men as the sort of measure the republican state convention had in mind when, last May, it pledged the enactment, by tbe pres ent legislature, of "a reasonable local option law." Nevertheless it has been referred to unfriendly committees in both the houae and aenate, and if pass ed at all will be in a greatly altered and emasculated form. Indeed, there seems to be among the republican leg islators at olympia a lot of weak-kneed fellows who mistake pliancy for shrewd ness, and double-dealing for foresight, and care should be taken to retire them to private lite at the close of the pres ent session. Party pledges are things to be ful filled, not abused, and there ia no place in tbe republican ranks for tbe liars and hypocrites just now so plentiful at the state capital.—Maiden Herald.
