Oroville Weekly Gazette By the GAZETTE PUBLISHING COMPANY. Frank M. Dallam, Kkkd. .1. Kink, Editor. Bus. Miiimser. Issued Every Friday. sl.soa.year Entered at the poßtolllee at Oroville, Washing ton, as second class matter. The so-called reform movement is considerably spotted. Over in Illinois a lot of legislators charged with being tainted by the corrupt use of money in the election of Lori met* to the i nited States senate—and the corruption has been established to the satisfaction, or dissatisfaction, of all honest men — have been “vindicated” through the primaries by renomination to the office they held when parties to the dis graceful commercializing of votes. Lorimer was elected senator by the aid of democratic legislators. Evidence has been forthcoming showing that there had been barter and sale of votes. Republicans were just as open to bids as democrats in this transaction. This method of breaking into the senate, which is not confined to Illinois, al though possibly in other cases not so openly tlagerant, is despised, deplored and denounced as earnestly by regular republicans as by insurgents, or any other honorable thinking men. The desire to gain the object in view with out regard to the means employed is not confined to party, and while, when a case of this kind does occur, it may reflect upon the party represented by the man who throws honor to the wind in his ambition for personal advance ment, the individual members of the party should not be held responsible. Bad men get into the church occasion ally, hence it is not to be wondered at that conscienceless manipulators come to the surface in political organiza tions. It does not naturally follow that because one man in high office is un worthy and corrupt that all men are. Unfortunately the exposure of the per fidy of one such individual is used to cast reflection upon others. The dis position of mankind to see the evil in men and overlook the purer and better attributes is responsible for the pre vailing and growing practice of unjust criticism, and the present day insis tence that all office holders are venal. The country is in an unfortunate con dition if the public is to lose faith and confidence in all men, and the trend of writers of the day is to foster that de plorable feeling. The fact is there are few Lorimers in public life, and the vast majority of officials, high and low, are honorable, upright, patriotic citi zens, serving the people faithfully, and aiming to enact and enforce such laws and provisions as will accomplish the greatest benefits to the country and the people thereof. Thksuddenly assumed vlrtueof those ‘ holier than thou people, who espouse j insurgency on the ground that it is a “reform” movement, loses the element j of sincerely when one considers how j little claim some of the loudest clack-1 ers have upon the confidence of thej public. When you see a great news-1 paper that studiously dodges just laxa-j lion, that for years has not played fair § with the people of the city in which it is published, which in itself is one of the greatest and most oppressive mon oplies in the state, which hesitates at nothing too despicabe to crush out op position prating of “clean politics,” “the interests,” “machine methods,” the public is led to suspicion that its championship of progressiveness is hy pocrisy, Pharisaism, deceit and cunning cant. Take it within the limit of your own surroundings and it is noticeeble that among the most radical insurgents you generally find men you would hes itate to trust in a business transaction, and you are inclined to feel that these mouthings are meaningless vaporings. “Civic righteousness” are very pretty catch words as a slogan for insurgency, but until individual righteousness, and the application of righteousness to bus iness methods, can be secured the civil brand is an effervescent phantasma goria. Everybody of clean and honest mind wants to see established a higher standard of thought and action politic- j al, as well as private, life, but that | desirable improvement can only be secured by degrees, not by spasmodic revolution. This hysteria produces j morbific agitators, who scent advance-1 ment in playing upon the prejudices of! the people, and that class soon pushes | aside the reformer actuated by sincere | and conscientious motives. The gdib j tongued demagogue always comes to the surface in agitations such as the insurgency movement, and there are more of that class already leaders in that infantile political production than \ is to be found among the old established ! parties that have contended for suprem acy for half a century. _ . The times politically are surely out of joint. Bryan is opposing the demo- j cratic candidate for governor of Ne braska. Bryan has taken a marked departure from the traditions of bour bonisra in favoring county local option, the democratic candidate for governor is opposed to that sumptuary law, hence the parting of the ways.
